The Door sent him directly into Sarina's apartment. Jake was grateful for it, a hand pressed against the bruise on his side he'd told his friends wasn't all that bad. It ached and he was sure it was already black and blue, but he was in one piece for the most part, and all he wanted to do was go home and sleep.
So of course Jeff - the Library - sent him to Sarina.
His lips curled into a small smile that tugged at the cut he'd gotten on his cheek when the goon's ring had hit his face. Not even the sting could take away from the delight he felt when his eyes landed on Sarina, whose surprise melted into worry as she caught sight of how banged up he was.
"I'm fine," he said immediately even as she hurried him over to a chair and took out the first aid kits she'd started stashing in each room just for situations like this. It made him soft and warm inside, and he could not keep the goofy grin off his lips even as she fretted over him. "Really, sweetheart." Jake placed a hand on top of hers when she lightly brushed against his cheek. The furrow between her eyes did not fade, but the look in her eyes was gentle with her concern and care.
She breathed out slowly. Jake could see her catalogue his hurts, tally them and slowly realise that he wasn't joking. He was fine. He could not fault her the wariness, not when he'd once walked through her door only to collapse immediately after. "Let me at least bandage you up." That was a compromise he could agree to, but before he let her hand go, he brushed a kiss to the back of it.
Sarina smiled at that, some more of her tension leeching out of her frame as she dabbed alcohol against his cut and placed butterfly bandages along it. She silently ordered him to show her the rest of his bruises, and Jake was compliant to go along with it. He could admit to loving the care she showered on him, the indulgence of having someone to come home to still like a dream. She was quick, practiced and steady, and once she was done she leaned back just enough to smooth down his shirt again. Hands on his shoulders, she pressed a kiss to his forehead and hummed lightly. "You should get some sleep."
His hands rested on her waist. Jake tilted his head up a little bit, brushing his lips against her chin. "I sleep better when you're next to me," he responded shamelessly. She huffed a laugh, glancing down at him. Her hair fell against his face, framing them as if a curtain between them and the rest of the world. Instead of answering, she kissed him, slow and languid, and then pulled away.
Holding out a hand for him, she smiled and wriggled her fingers teasingly. Jake grinned, crooked and easy, and took her hand.
