Happy Beltane and May Day! Happy Walpurgisnacht! May Day and many of the other spring time festivals involve dancing around a May Pole. The pillar is circled by dancers and wrapped in ribbons. That is what my artwork here depicts. You’ll notice the wicker man vibe I gave this piece with each of the dancers wearing an odious looking festival mask. It gives it a sort of pagan feel as these rituals pre-dated Christianity. Ancient traditions welcoming in the warmer months are present in many cultures. The Celts called it Beltane. The old English called it May Day. The Norse called it Midsommer. These old traditions and customs are still present in modern times. It’s MAY DAY, and it’s also my BIRTHDAY (which may explain why I’m naturally drawn to the Old Ways). May Day is the English connotation for annual Spring rituals found throughout Europe dating back to the Roman Empire. The Celts called it Beltane (lucky fire) where cows were led to jump over fires to prevent the faeries from stealing their milk (to learn more about the Celtic Beltane, check out @beltanefiresociety Who had revived Beltane in Scotland with amazing performances based on the old customs and folklore). - Germanic countries called the eve before May 1 Hexennacht (night of the witches) where local lore pointed to an annual witches meeting on the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains. - May Day and many of the other spring time festivals involve dancing around a May Pole.
