He has held it in such reverence all these years. Dreaming of the day when the unicorn is part of his legacy. Today Tam gets to be part of the storied history. Through the years, I might have given him one or two mindbending workouts. I make no apologies. There are no easy shortcuts to Hopkinton. As I told @lucyledezma before Chicago 2013. “Lucy, I know you can qualify for Boston. Ya gotta want it. If you think you have a chance at 22-23 you have to dig deep and go get it.” So when it came time for Tam at #QueensMarathon 2018, I was going to make him move to go get it and he answered the call. Back in 2009, I always thought there was no reason Tam not to qualify. That belief never wavered. Now, Tam gets to call himself a BOSTONFINISHER. Nacho is one of the most interesting and unbelievably dedicated passionate soul I know. One night at @bridgerunners he showed not knowing a soul. Just expat Spaniard looking for a running group to this city. I have been able to witness how much work he has put in to get here. Nacho and Tam busted their asses chasing the unicorn dream. It was my honor, and highlight of my life, to drape the Boston medal in light of their incredible achievement. Sure it was not an easy road. Nor should it have been. All sweeter After so many years Came the joyful tears. Congrats to Hopkinton bound @inmyrunningshoes . 🙌 The first 2 pictures are circa 2015 when I pushed Tam hard on Tuesday nights in the Park. As you can see, he enjoyed every minute of #Tamming. The 3rd picture is a repost from #QueensMarathon this year where Tam punched his ticket for Boston 2020. Could not be any happier or prouder. Boston Qualifier. It has a special ring. But for some years now it hasn't been enough because the qualifying buffer became achingly frustratingly out of reach for thousands. To come so close and be denied the chance to head to the start line on Patriot's Day is a disappointment hard to let go of and even harder to commit to pushing the rock up the hill again, knowing how excruciating the lungs have to sear become a much faster version of oneself, that even successful, it might not be enough. Tam has dreamed of Boston as long as I have known him. He ranged the doorbell for years until last year when he was allowed to wait in the foyer but not enter the interior. This morning he once again proved he belonged on the inside. May the living room door open for him in September after registration.
