Look I'm well aware that very few are gonna see this but PLEASE. I AM BEGGING PEOPLE TO GO WATCH ORBITAL REDUX.
Seriously, it's a BRILLIANT 8 episode Sci-fi series that you can find on DUST for free. It has a diverse cast and brilliant characters that you fall in love with by the first episode and it only gets better from there. The main characters Max and Tommie have such great chemistry, going from almost rivals to quick friends when they realise how simpler they are. It honestly felt like a father/daughter-brother/sister relationship which I loved, the series feels like a growing found family which every one of these characters needs. Max was gonna be my favourite character from the jump, due to his actor Yuri Lowenthal, and I knew that but I fell in love with him not only for is own character (he's petty with a moral code we love to see it) but also for his relationships with the rest of the characters. Him and Marc are the cutest couple and every interaction feels believable. You feel for both characters as they're clearly both passionate about their careers as well as being completely in love with each other. (Spoilers real quick- Max and Marc' s final call getting cut off before Max can say I love broke me and Max telling Marc about watching him paint before he left for his mission was so sweet I'm tempted to make fanart of it. If this thing had a large active fandom I know that dialogue would be fucking EVERYWHERE) Tommie is brilliant and I love her blunt attitude and the fact that she is willing to learn from her mistakes. You watch her change over this short time but it never feels forced, her problems with communicating feel genuine and oddly relatable. Lilly is wonderful and pulls of being both comic relief and a genuine friend to Max and a new one for Tommie. There are a few other characters but these are the ones with the most screen time.
The set is awesome, the Tchaikovsky is up there with the Enterprise when it comes to my favourite space ships.( I really want a patch of the Tchaikovsky's emblem) And the whole set was hand built by the cast and crew from old military scraps and both main leads had to learn how the wiring worked to get the effects right. The sound design is great from the ost to Max's personal music taste.
The backstory they set up for this not so distance future is interesting as well and left me thinking about what life would be like in that society. And it's never just given all at once, whenever exposition comes out it feels natural. A great example of this happens in the first episode when Tommie cause a safety issue to put it mildly and while Max and Tommie scramble to fix it Max explains what had happened in universe that lead to that issue and response. I know that's vague but I want people to go in with as fresh a pair of eyes as possible.
Plus every episode was performed live in one completely take. Everything you hear and see was all originally done live but even taking that away it's a brilliant little series that's just over 2 hours in total (and that's including the bonus episodes which are a cast viewing party and a bts episode).
My only complaint is that Max never wears a shirt that says "space is gay and so am i" but that can always be fix via fanart.
In short please way h this show it's great. And then either talk to me about it and/or make some shit inspired by it.
