It’s a quick game about friendship and overthrowing space governments, featuring a colorful cast of queer characters, made by a colorful cast of queer characters. 01. HARRY DU BOIS (Disco Elysium)

Drunk, amnesiac detective and protagonist of Disco Elysium, Harry can be controlled by the player to investigate a murder but he is very much his own character. His repressed bisexuality can be discovered accidentally in so many different ways, my favorite being the absolute enraptured and dreamy way Harry reacts to the Smoker on the Balcony, which happens indipendently from players' choices!

The rules For something different I wanted to add queer protagonists in videogames (excluding romance simlators). To end up in the list the only criteria were: named protagonist, the protagonist has a story that cannot be customized by the player (so for example the Inquisitor from Dragon Age did not fit!), and ideally the protagonist is their own character not customisable at all.

A thousand thanks to @lairofsentinel and @alcassin to help me complete these lists!

I am finally putting all the games I know with same sex/queer romances. Mainly, I am focusing on non-dating games, so games that are about a specific plot, adventures, other non-romantic events but that do have romance options in them.

Recommended: Are all games that I played personally and that have full romance. Informational: Games I know have romance, but I have not played personally or I could not confirm there was enough romantic content, or games where the romantic content is minimal (ex. Fable)

The lists are divided (linked) in:

RPGS (ex. BG3, DA:O, DO2 etc.), in total 39 games are currently added in this list

Visual novels that do not focus around dating (ex. Solstice, Loren etc.) but that still have romantic options/romantic storylines, currently 10 games in the list

Life simulators or walking simulators (ex. Stardew Valley), currently 7 games in the list

Others, currently 7 games in the list. Others are all games that did not end up in the above categories (ex. hack and slash games like Hades, puzzle games like Newfound courage)

There is also a category for dating sim visual novels. Here I will only add games I played and enjoyed given that it is usually pretty easy to find queer visual novels.

02. THE ANALANDER (SORCERY!)

In the text rpg Sorcery! game (all four are part of one unique story) you play as The Analander. While you can choose the gender of the protagonist, most of their past and characterzation is fixed. The Analander is on a journey to recover a stolen magical crown - and on the way they can also romance and fall in love with Flanker, an assassin. If you play a male Analander, this means that your protagonist will be queer! The romance with Flanker is actually a big part of game 4!

05. BRYALINNE (PENDULA SWING)

Bryalinne is the protagonist of Pendula Swing a roaring 20s fantasy videogame where the player will have to find a stolen axe and explore a world Bryalinne isolated herself from. Bryalinne is canonically wlw in the story, as she used to be married to a woman and is now a widow. Pendula Swing is a game about Bryalinne starting to live again after years of grief and isolation, into a world that she can barely recognize and where she is remembered as a hero. The game also has multiple romances that are optional.
