#okay I am posting this again because I am seriously considering getting a chair#but I still feel kind of guilty because I wouldn't use it that much bc I can walk fine but sometimes it just gets#so painful I don't know how to breathe#but I wouldn't be able to use it much because my school has few lifts and many buildings and many many stairs#and it's expensive and my insurance wouldn't cover it#like I find a p cheap one on Amazon but it's still a tonne of money that I really can't afford to spend right now#plus I don't even have an official diagnosis because doctors are befuddled lol#and my uncles quadriplegic so idk how he would take that and idk I don't feel my pain is valid enough#plus my mum is afraid I'll become dependent on it#then again she says the same thing about pain meds#like she doesn't even like me taking aleve#and I understand her points but is that ableist?#obvi I don't wanna become addicted to pain meds but I'm exploding here#anyway if s disabled person reads this please help#I don't know what to do and a chair feels right but it feels like I should just keep on grinning and bearing it#lol what if I'm faking it for attention#wtf st myself u don't want the chair bc ur afraid of how others will react aka OTHERS ATTENTJON U CABT make up pain that makes u#literally almost faint#look add myself I'm arguing with myself in the tags#okay I'm done#conclusion: I want a chair but I'm scared

Hey there! I’m the OP of the wheelchair PSA post and I just wanted to give you some encouragement. My mom was similarly afraid of me getting “dependent” on pain meds or a wheelchair, but I ultimately had to do it anyway. Note that I didn’t need Rx pain meds or a wheelchair until I was living away at college, which sort of helped. Hopefully you’ll be able to work something out.

I think your doctor may be the best way to approach it. A good doctor will help you treat your symptoms even if they haven’t found the cause yet, and that includes prescribing you a wheelchair. Pain meds are good, but a wheelchair is also good and not “addictive,” lol, just in case that’s an issue for the doctor. You don’t get “dependent” on it from using it! You get dependent on it as your condition worsens. AB people don’t get it. Also, if you get a manual chair, you can use your feet on the ground to help while your arms are adjusting to pushing. A doctor’s note can help with the school issue.

Anyway, instead of framing the wheelchair as something you depend on or a way to be lazy (because let’s face it, that’s how AB people view it), see if you have good results framing it like “I just want to go, go, go and get things done, even when I’m in so much pain I think I might throw up. Right now I’m just not leaving the house/not having a social life/not getting out of bed when the pain hits. With a wheelchair, I could do all my normal things and then some!”

Lastly, consider a rolling walker with a seat (the one in the link has been mine for years). I used one all through undergrad, and it was a life saver. It’s cheaper than a wheelchair, much lighter and easy to transport (esp up stairs and onto the bus) than a wheelchair, holds your backpack while you’re walking, provide a seat whenever you need it (e.g., waiting in line) and some transform into a wheelchair in disguise! That Medline Freedom is only 11 lbs. As an additional bonus, I flipped the handles around and was able to hold it in a way that was MUCH better on my fragile arm joints.
