How come the same people who complain about microlabels are also the ones who say we can't use the word queer? Like, we can't be too specific but we also can't use an umbrella term like wtf?
Actually! That’s for a surprisingly similar reason. For example I’m a non-binary biromantic asexual with demi leanings. That’s a lot of words, right? I’m also simply and completely queer. And that annoys the fuck out of them because they can’t easily say the community is “”completely gay, like me.””
And for some they absorbed so much hate that even they have trouble accepting a world beyond gay or straight. Because “”being gay is hard enough why we have to go make it more complicated.””
But people are complicated, no binary will ever contain them all. And that’s why I find such beauty in the word queer.
People who hate “”extra”” labels also hate that queer zooms out the picture so that no one sexuality can be neatly sold to our oppressors. I find that brilliant, protective, and an overall good thing. Those who don’t, often fear that a gay or straight binary is still too hard for people to accept. Given that the rise of labels has also coincided with rise of youth no longer identify as cis and/or straight I think that proves their fears wrong.
