"I can make it official, Daryl Dixon is straight. Making him gay was just an idea I was batting around and chose to be vague about for a while." Well thanks for queerbaiting me! And saying that even though it doesn't matter because you JUST categorized him as asexual! You can literally go fuck yourself with a cactus, Robert Kirkman.
Use #QueerDarylDixon tonight!
use the hashtag #QueerDarylDixon on your public social media posts (especially Twitter) during and around the episode tonight to show your support for and spread awareness of #QueerDarylDixon as positive representation in canon that fans stand by!
literally every single person should stan for queer daryl tbh
there are so many consequences to the disregard for queer lives and queer identities that people show and they have no comprehension of it
no matter what anyone ships, there is no excuse to not support daryl coming out as queer in canon
God fucking bless Norman Reedus, who was pissed off enough about homophobic assholes putting words in his mouth and making it seem like he was anything less than THRILLED at the idea of playing Daryl queer to speak out against them on his Twitter and call the shit tabloid misinformation and the people that spread it bullshit. (Norman's tweet | tw at the original article for homophobia especially in the comment section)
Take that as a message to every single person out there who tries to make it seem like Norman is not supportive of this as a potential reading. Whatever your interpretation of the material is- whatever your ships are, they don't matter. Daryl as queer deserves to be treated with as much respect and legitimacy as him being straight (if not more), and it's a possibility that everyone associated with the show but most significantly Norman Reedus himself has shown support for.
You aren't into it? Fine, whatever, I don't give a shit!
Neither does he.
But don't you dare make it seem like he isn't, or put words in his mouth or act like he isn't supportive of that interpretation. That's insulting to him, to all of the queer people who work on this show, and to all of the queer fans who support it.
Norman is 100% supportive of the idea of Daryl being queer and fans who are thrilled for the idea, and he spoke out and called that article bull when he could have just ignored it. Regardless of Daryl's orientation in the show, his support for Daryl as queer as a valid reading means EVERYTHING. and I'm absolutely grateful.
Everyone who is tweeting or liveblogging tonight, remember that #QueerDarylDixon is the hashtag for the QDD campaign. If you're excited by the idea of or supportive of a queer Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead, then use this hashtag in some of your tweeting tonight and throughout the season!
"When asked if the possibility of Daryl being gay had been considered, Kirkman answered, “All I can say is that it’s been discussed. We have very specific ideas about Daryl’s sexuality (or the seeming lack thereof), and if there’s ever a quiet period in the show where he’s not consistently distracted by crossbowing… we’ll tackle it in the show.”
When also asked if AMC would let the possibility of Daryl Dixon being gay fly, Kirkman responded, “For the record, they absolutely would.”
Well darlins, I'm back from Otakon, and this is like coming home to a piece of strawberry cheesecake dripping in syrup and covered in berries waiting for me to dig right the fuck in.
Because this? This is MONUMENTAL.
Regardless of if Daryl's sexuality is ever revealed in the show, or what it might ever be revealed to be, this statement right here is showing that Daryl as queer has been taken seriously as a possibility. Not just by queer fans- not just by shippers of queer ships- not just by people starved and grasping and clutching at the crumbs we're given- but by the people who are creating this show.
That it has been taken seriously enough to be discussed, that it has been taken seriously enough to not be dismissed outright but to be kept under wraps and thus treated as JUST AS LEGITIMATE A POSSIBILITY AS DARYL BEING STRAIGHT.
(and you all know me, so you KNOW that I've long thought that I think Daryl as queer is much more likely than Daryl as straight, but that's another conversation entirely)
Daryl as queer is no longer something that other fans can dismiss as ludicrous, not only because we were ALWAYS legitimate and if you EVER dismissed us you should feel bad-- but because we have now been officially legitimized. It's not just fan conjecture; it's a possibility and it's been an official one. It's a possibility that AMC would stand behind and support. It's a possibility that the show creators and that we know Norman Reedus would stand behind and support. It's a possibility that queer fans and straight fans alike DESERVE to have treated as worthwhile.
If you ever told us we were being ridiculous- if you ever told us they would never, AMC would never, TWD's showrunners would never, if you ever told us we were being delusional- if you ever told us Daryl couldn't be because he didn't fit enough of your stereotypes- if you ever told us it was impossible-- you need to realize how very wrong you were and why what you said was wrong on a moral level and not just on a factual level.
I'm celebrating. Whatever happens- and you can bet your ass this gives me real, concrete hope, because anyone who takes it seriously enough to talk about it this much is more likely to to maybe even do it- we've been treated like we, and the idea of a queer Daryl- the idea that the most bad-ass character on television, the brooding sex symbol, the gorgeous moody protagonist, the idol of the South, the break from every stereotype-- we've been treated like stereotypes don't exist and queer Daryl could possibly BE, and that means the world.
Thanks.
Someone tell me where to send Robert Kirkman a #QueerDarylDixon teeshirt :) he's earned it.
darlings! after much wait, you can now have #QUEERDARYLDIXON shirts of your very very own!
For now they come in "men's" and "women's" styles and sizes.
They can be purchased from the QueerDarylDixon.Spreadshirt.Com store here.
Spreadshirt does ship internationally, though it costs a little bit more money than shipping to the US. The shirts themselves aren't very expensive, because I currently have it set so there is zero profit being made off of these whatsoever, so if you'd like to buy them while they're less than $20 please jump now!
What I would like to do is to find an LGBT charity to donate future proceeds from these shirts to. If you know of one, especially one that relates in some way to either Norman, TWD, or LGBT representation in media, please let me know.
I haven't yet gotten my own shirt in the mail yet so if you have any problems relating to how the design looks, I'd like to know. If you have any problems with this relating to spreadshirt, please contact them.
If you have any problems relating to not agreeing about Daryl being queer, please keep them to yourself, and respect fans who are trying to show their support for LGBT representation and maybe one day raise money for a good cause while they're doing it.
Thank you and I hope a lot of us get to wear these as time goes on! If you ever get the chance to take a picture with the cast wearing your #QUEERDARYLDIXON shirt, please submit it to us!
