This is what I am.
I wake up. I breathe. I think. I know what I am, but still...I do not. I drag myself out of bed, remembering who I am.
I set the water on in my kitchen. Tea? Coffee? My sister comes downstairs, bleary in her wakened state. How blissful it must be, to be young.
To be free, but still locked away by adults.
Coffee, for me, and tea for her. No time. I'm almost out of instant. I should buy more...no time. No time. There's never any time. Who am I? Oh. That's right. Should I walk her to the bus stop? Will she be safe? It's a dangerous world, for a child. She won't be safe. Ever, anywhere.
I don't know who I am. There's a little girl. She's scared, shouting a name. Is it mine? Why am I holding coffee? I spill it on myself. It burns, staining my shirt. What is this I'm feeling? Pain?
The ground is solid, carrying us, bearing out weight. I lie on it, letting the rain wash over me. Sinking into the mud a little, but that's alright, I won't fall.
Here I stand. The lights are dim. It smells like machines, and I can barely breathe. The air is thick with pollution, filling my lungs. I long for fresh air.
But I left that place. Now I'm here, underground, waiting for my next ride to arrive. He drives me as far as we agreed. And then he doesn't let me out of the car. So I wait, until he drops me off in a busy city. to this day I don't know why.
I'm sure it'll be okay. I'll meet new people, and get a job, and keep moving. I remember a little girl. She's safe now. Everything will be fine.
Children crying, so loud. I don't know what they want. I watch them, watched their parents try to calm them down. It works, somehow, and the train is quiet again. I like this better. I get off at my stop, walking into the large marble building, counters stretching around the room. I look around, trying to locate her. She said she would meet me here.
She's not here. I waited for an hour. She's still not here. What am I to do? I look around me. I ask for directions, to where is unimportant. I leave.
Grownups walking children. I am cold, as the wind blows ruthlessly. I have no coat. The children stare at me, their parents quickly leading them away from the sight I must be. A plane, falling out of the air. Not a large one. Headed for a clearing, where a single, crying child sits alone. I run into the field, grabbing her, getting her as far away as possible, protecting her with my body.
She recognizes me.
I remember who I am.
