since we’ve gotten to that episode i’m currently thinking about that gates (iirc) tweet where she was like “crusher having to fall for riker hosting odan, YUCK, ICK!!! LIKE KISSING A BROTHER if she had fallen for DEANNA though??????” and thinking about how this episode ends with beverly politely separating with odan as a woman and using the phrase “perhaps one day human love won’t be so limited” and just like. you know Thinking About What Could Have Been Or Whatever...

(This is a Downton Abbey post. Sorry.)

I have THOUGHTS about Downton Abbey, and they are sort of related to language, if you're into that sort of thing.

SO.  I'm watching Downton Abbey 2x06 (pleasedon'tspoilmeI'monlyhalfwaythroughtheepisode, ohgodwhydoIloveBritishperioddramassomuchIcan'thelpitwhatiswrongwithme) and I am getting SUPER distracted and annoyed by the supposed Patrick.  Okay, you we all thought you were killed when the TItanic sank, but supposedly you weren't, hooray.  You made it to Canada somehow, even though you had a blow to the head and whatever.  It seems, however, that this blow to your head gave you amnesia and you took your last name from a gin bottle (CLASSY) and YOUR ENTIRE ACCENT CHANGED.  I am by no means an expert on memory loss and language -- in fact, I know nothing -- but I am A LITTLE SUSPICIOUS that amnesia would make you stop talking like a quiet, emotionless, upper-crust Englishman and turn you into a loud and sort of brassy Canadian.  WHAT.  Also, somehow, you can't remember who you are, but you talk about remembering talking less formally back in the good ol' days before you became Canadian.  Hmm.

ALSO.  His accent is SUPER jarring, especially since I'm used to all of these lovely, assorted British accents murmuring at me though my headphones besides Cora wtf is going with your hybrid accent aghhhh, and then all of a sudden there's Mr. Canada blathering about not being recognized.

(Finally, how did Patrick age, like, 40 years in the span of something like 6?  I realize you're disfigured etc BUT REALLY.)

(Also, one thing I love about Downton Abbey, besides all of the drama and stiff upper lip and oh-sorry-you're-paralyzed-would-you-like-some-tea, is the smorgasbord of regional varieties of English that I get to listen to.  WHEE!)
