Details, woman! How are Ariel and Caliban done? I wish for details!
Oh man, it was PERFECT. Ariel was all coated in white powder, except for the palms of his hands, and he was constantly doing these amazing card tricks. And he had Teller's mannerisms down to a T. I don't know if that was intended or if Teller just coached him and he picked them up by accident. But all these little hand gestures and behaviours that are so Teller had me practically giggling.
Caliban was two men who were mostly naked, covered in paint, and climbing all over each other. It was yummmmmmmy. And also grotesque and disgusting. So perfectly Caliban
The magic was integrated into the play perfectly with all these wonderful vanishings/appearings, card tricks, and some classics like a variation on sawed-in-half and levitation.
All in all, it was hands down my favourite variation of the Tempest and probably my favourite play A.R.T. has put on. And it's basically sold out every performance, which I hope means that Teller will do more magic adaptations like this in the future.
