I was in the WEEDS of the Sherlock fandom back in the day in high school and the way Sally was treated by the fandom for being mean to the uwu baby grown man main character Sherlock when he was openly rude as fuck to her (making comments about her sex life while she was working etc) was weird as fuck - especially rewatching it as an adult. She’s also black, and I defs think that impacted the treatment of her unfortunately

Caitlyn Kiramman:

Had a very morally-grey arc in S2 that she attempts to atone for and verbally explains was wrong on multiple occasions by the end of the season; it has been almost two years and people still use it as an excuse to hate her, her girlfriend and the show as a whole. Led to horrifically tone-deaf (misogynistic, lesbophobic and racist) fanworks and memes. Her tag across platforms was filled with them for months. Nevermind that there's at least two white men in this fandom with higher on-screen kill counts, more manipulative/unjust behaviour and much less remorse for their actions who are almost universally beloved.

Fandom cannot handle a woman who is at all morally complex or imperfect! Her actions make perfect sense for the circumstances she's in and the personality/history she's established to have; I'd argue that she gets the best-written arc in the show. She's also a 6'0" lesbian who knows exactly how smart and competent and hot she is.

Any mistakes she has made or bad things she has done are treated as the worst thing in the world and unforgiveable and automatically make her garbage but when men do the same thing or even worse they are mostly forgiven and liked by the wider fandom. In fact, the main canonical ship in the fandom involves her but the ship is constantly pushed to the side or reviled by those who ship the two male characters who do not exactly have a canonical ship, though there are heavy implications that the writers should have just made a reality.

Caitlyn Kiramman was never meant to be a perfect character and she is supposed to be a reflection on how someone born into an oppressor class can struggle with changing their perspective/actions and how things like grief and anger can affect how a person in her position can easily fall into patterns of behavior aligned with the agenda of the oppressor class. The fact that by the end she admitted her mistakes and did her damndest to make amends and do the right thing (even sacrificing her own eye) and actually triumphed over someone else in the oppressor class who was oppressing her (cause lets be real even if you are apart of the oppressor class you are going to also be oppressed by someone else higher up than you), is a huge deal and people just completely ignore that narrative and ignore that fact that, in the real world, they could also be driven to do things they aren't proud of out of grief and anger and are capable of actions that harm minorities and oppressed classes of people, even unintentionally.

Arcane is buffered by virtue of actually having a complex and nuanced female cast. The misogyny of actual Sherlock made the fandom 100000 times worse to its female characters.

I also considered titling it “(New) Sect Leader Jin” but I thought that would be confusing, and “Rulan” better parallels the original painting title.

Do you know how hard it is to find a reference for Fairy? Anyone who's not a primary target of transmisogyny benefits from transmisogyny, Anon, so no hesitation, yeah.

But to get a bit more in-depth, just because trans men can experience misogyny doesn't mean they're targets of transmisogyny.

In fact, much like other people who aren't targets of transmisogyny, they can use their distance from transfems to their advantage. That works especially well in the trans community.

They don't need society as a whole to believe they're men in order to benefit, though that obviously varies depending on the scenario.

An obvious one would be that studies point to the fact that, in the US at the least, trans men generally earn more than trans women. They also benefit in the sense that there's less social frenzy over trans men being pedophiles and they're less targeted in the news and by explicitly transmisogynist hate groups.

(Not to say they are not targeted, just less targeted.)

That's connected to the fact that trans men are less likely to be brutally attacked and murdered than trans women are (which is also connected to the fact trans women are more likely to be sex workers, which is connected yet again to the fact they often earn less and are more targeted.)

This even leads to benefits with TERFs where plenty of terfs are more interested in "peaking" or converting trans men/mascs to their ideology, while pushing for trans women to be killed.

It also shows in the whole "detrans" ideology groups as well, where they prefer (white) transmasc(?) detransitioners to lead parts of their campaigns and do interviews explaining how they were "lured in" to the "trans ideology" and taken advantage of, while posing that transfems in particular are doing the "luring", often with sexual violence in mind.

Depending on where you live, there are even extra steps to certain types of transitioning if you're transfem and extra punishments (like v coding) for transfems in prison.

Obviously, this can vary depending on factors like race but still apply. There are a lot of different examples but these are some of the ones coming to mind immediately.

Not being a victim of a specific form of oppression is a very different thing from *BENEFITING* from a system of oppression. Claiming that everyone outside a particular oppressed group *benefits* from that group's oppression is not how systemic oppression works like at all.

All white people benefit from racism because racism is a systematic system that privileges whiteness. The idea that trans men have a similar systematic privilege over trans women is just patently incorrect.

Trans men and trans women experience unique aspects of being trans, and yes, the hypervisibility of transfeminine people means they face higher rates of specific kinds of violence.

But please look into the statistics around actual abuses of trans men and transmasc people, as surveys consistently reveal things like incredibly high rates of corrective rape, interpersonal relationship violence and severe social and emotional health issues. If trans men have privilege over trans women (and that's a big if), it is based on the false notion that trans men operate in the world indistinguishable from cis men and thus with reliable access to male privilege and the benefits therein. I, a femmeboy not frequently mistaken for a trans woman, does not have access to any sort of male privilege.

I promise you being treated like a poor broken doll led astray who just needs to return to good old feminine Christian values is not actually a reflection that trans men are benefitting from SHIT. And guess what? They're taking my HRT too because I'm 'mutilating my beautiful god given feminine body'.

They hate trans women and trans men for the same reasons: Because of they way they interpret womanhood as a biologically determined reproductive role. Trans women will 'always be men' because they cannot fill this role and trans men are 'failed women' because of the ways we reject that role.

Just because our oppressors use different tools to attack us doesn't mean they're not trying to kill us both.

You know what? I’m not done talking about the “did JGY make Qin Su kill herself” question.

To recap: Qin Su looks very brainwashed in the tv adaptations (though admittedly that’s very subjective), she has a cursed dagger, and the timing of her death is very convenient for eliminating a voice that could incriminate JGY, drawing sympathy, and shifting blame to MXY. JGY did make her go to sleep trapped in the room where he and his henchmen likely tried to control Wen Ning.

It’s also notable to me that we learn so much about the dagger: it’s an assassin’s weapon, WRH owned it, it traps souls. That’s more info than you need to put a Chekhov’s gun in the scene. This is an extremely sussy mcguffin. Other soul-stealing objects and entities (the dancing goddess statue, for one), can control people.

On the other hand, what makes me doubt JGY forced her to kill herself is that it was kind of too convenient, even as a distraction–not to mention very risky. What if someone well versed in curses, such as the yiling laozu, picked up on the weird vibe and prevented her from killing herself? Furthermore, it’s not like Qin Su has no motive to take her fate into her own hands for once and get what little vengeance she can.

Then again, the plausibility of Jiggy’s guilt might be the point, right? We know from his other actions that there are very few things JGY won’t do to survive. If his hand was really forced then yes, I think he would harm even Jin Ling. This does not mean that he does not love Jin Ling, and it doesn’t mean that he does not love Qin Su. I firmly believe he loved Jin Rusong, too… but JGY’s survival drive is so strong that self-preservation outweighs any of that. Not everyone is built for self-sacrifice. Most people aren’t. Jiggy is perhaps a more extreme case than most and those limits get tested more than most people will (hopefully) experience in their lives.

By series end it’s hard to tell which things JGY actually did and which things he indirectly (maybe even unintentionally) caused or didn’t cause at all. To what extent is he a wolf preying on sheep? To what extent is he a fox cornered by dogs?

I know this is a pretty classic stance for me to take, and it may be unsatisfying to some, but I think the point is that we can’t know for sure.

The fact that so many people in this fandom want to know 'for sure' actually bothers me so much ngl.

This is a story about the power of rumors, group think and societal pressure determining outcomes. 'Objective truth' is both narratively and meta-textually completely irrelevant, and questions are frequently left unanswered or given contradicting evidence. This is a story that's asking us to think about who gets served by neat tidy narratives, how catastrophic misdirection doesn't require falsehoods to be devastating, and how easy it is to be tricked into terrible things with just the right story being fed to you.
