Dante: [Quickly dialed his sister’s number and waited for her to pick up. His grip on the steering wheel became so tight that his knuckles turned white.] Fucking pick up, J.
Jocelyn: [Heard her phone vibrating on the nightstand next to the hotel bed. She reached over and picked it up. Prying one eye open to see who was calling, she let out a groan, and swiped her thumb across the screen to answer.] Hello? [She turns on the bedside lamp.]
Dante: J, sorry to call you. I know you’re still in Vegas and all, but-
Jocelyn: D, do you know what time it is? [She hold her phone out to check herself and sighs.] It’s 4 AM.
Dante: I know, trust me, I know. I’m calling to tell you Granddad is in the hospital.
Jocelyn: [Remains in stunned silence.]
Dante: J? Cub… [He waits a few more seconds.] Jocelyn…
Jocelyn: [She sits up.] What happened? [Her sudden movements woke Xavier up and he slowly sits up too.]
Dante: He, uh, the nurse was making her rounds. She found Granddad trying to get out of bed. She was trying to get to him and help, but he collapsed.
Jocelyn: Collapsed? What do you even mean he collapsed? Did he say anything? Why wasn’t there someone watching him?
Dante: Joce, he can’t be under surveillance 24/7. [He pulled into the ER parking lot.] I don’t know much more after that. I’m not really sure. The home called me and told me what I told you and now. They said he’s in a lot of pain and… that’s all I know. He’s at Cedar Sinai. I just got here. I just wanted you to know.
Jocelyn: No, he could have! [She almost yelled.] Something doesn’t sound right. He just got up and fell? What even? I’m coming home. [She gets up out of bed and throws her on the maxi dress she had laid out for the morning. She stormed into the bathroom and started to toss their belongings into the travel bags. Whether or not they belonged in said bags, she didn’t care.]
Dante: J, he’s old. No, I - J, you should get some rest and I’ll call-
Jocelyn: Fuck rest! I’m not resting until I see that he’s okay! What did you think was going to happen after you tell me something like this?
Dante: Look, I know you’re worried and scared, but… how about you sit down and breathe for a little. Calm down.
Jocelyn: The fuck… how can you tell me to calm down when Granddad’s in the hospital? I will not fucking calm down!
Dante: J, come on… you’re going to wake everyone there up.
Jocelyn: Then they should wake the fuck up! I’m not… [She stops and lets out a breath.] No. I’m coming home and that’s final.
Dante: [He knew that there was no talking her down or into getting a few moments more of rest, so he decided to send Xavier a text asking him to try.] Okay, just be safe.
Jocelyn: [With a bit of bitterness in her tone.] Yeah. [She chewed on the inside of her bottom lip to keep from being emotional.] Keep me updated until I get there.
Jocelyn: What? [Her voice breaks.]
Dante: He’s going to be okay.
Jocelyn: And who are you to know that for sure?
Jocelyn: No, you know what? No. I don’t need anyone trying to sugarcoat this right now. I need to hang up and I have – [She pauses to collect herself.] I have to pack. I’ll see you in a few hours.
