“Murder your darlings” -- Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch
Darlings = irrelevant or superfluous parts in your writing that you like, but just Do Not Work
Darlings =/= your characters
You don’t have to kill your characters to be a good writer.
Some advice* on character death:
If you do kill a character, the death should have purpose and help to drive the story.
Don’t just kill a character because you’re at a loss of how to develop them (as in, this shouldn't be the sole reason)
Character death for the shock value of character death Does Not Work.
Killing off too many characters can make the reader disinterested. The characters carry the story and give the reader someone to relate to. Take that connection away and the writing becomes dull.
*I’m in no way a professional. This is what I’ve learned from experience, and is in no way a set of concrete rules for writing.
