Mary Lee Bendolph is a master quiltmaker from Gee’s Bend, a small, remote, black community located along a curve in the Alabama River southwest of Selma. Here, many of the residents can trace their ancestry back to the enslaved people who worked on the nearby Pettway Plantation. Quilts have been an important part of life throughout that history and carry forward a proud tradition of artistry made for home and family. This June, Mary Lee Bendolph’s works will be presented alongside other quiltmakers and artists spanning several generations from Gee’s Bend and Rehoboth, Alabama, in “Souls Grown Deep: Artists of the African American South.” This exhibition will mark the debut of our recent acquisition of 24 works form the Souls Grown Deep Foundation.

“The Quiltmaker’s Gift” by Linda Benton of Ponte Vedra, Florida.
Inspired by the book, The Quiltmaker's Gift by Jeff Brumbeau (Illustrated by Gail de Marcken), this fanciful quilt won the Artistic Merit award. I love how her miniature pieced quilt lies perfectly in her lap, and her Quiltmaker’s soft intensity as she works. Just beautiful!

I wouldn’t be able to keep my paws away from this quilt either! It’s beautiful!!! ❤️#quiltsofinstagram #Repost @thegrangefarmhouse ・・・ Finished this quilt after about 6 long months! I struggled between a cat and a crazy toddler to get a photo & this is the best one! It's getting a wash and will be ready to use soon. Finally one for me to snuggle on the couch; right as the weather is warming up! Typical 😂 #quilt #handsewn #quiltsofinstagram #tanyawhelan #9square #hearts #scraps #scrapquilt #scrappyquilt #handmade #mum #toddler #cat #quilting #quiltmaker #quilt

Our Waverly Path quilt is the July/August issue of Quiltmaker magazine. The beautiful quilting was done by Ann McKinney of the Florida Quilting Center. The fabric is part of the Jinny Beyer palette from RJR Fabrics. Swipe left to see the quilting up close and the quilt in the magazine. The quilt is named after a beautiful garden with winding paths near my mother and sister’s homes. #bluebearquilts #quiltmaker #quiltmakermag #floridaquiltingcenter #rjrfabrics #jinnybeyerpalette #drunkardspath https://www.instagram.com/p/CAsnJ0gH7ZM/?igshid=18y41c9z8e7mb
