Seeking to find himself in the aftermath of a turbulent past, Axel’s only purpose was to run and chase the sunset. But then he winds up in Destiny Islands where he meets a young man who is the real deal in more ways than one, and suddenly he’s forgetting to stick to the plan. Roxas is determined to start the next chapter of his life and make it big. But he wondered how many miles he needed to put between himself and unrequited love before he felt whole again. One night, he jumps into a car with a total stranger and comes a little closer to having an answer.
8.13 is gonna come sooner than I think
The Vegetable Soup Incident
“You really don’t have to do this.”
“Oh, yeah?”
Axel opened the pantry door, revealing the vast emptiness that almost seemed to vindicate the alarming haste with which he’d arrived at Roxas’s dorm, groceries and health-consciousness lecture in tow.
“Y’know what I see here? A travesty. One that I’ve come to remedy, so you’re welcome. I’m not just gonna leave you to survive on cereal when you’re sick.
“There’s also mac n’ cheese—”
“Right, because having three times the recommended daily sodium intake is gonna fix your cold. Not a chance. You’re having vegetables.”
Roxas sighed.
“It’s not like I said ‘no.’ But I guess … as long as this is actually happening … do you need any help?”
Some form of embarrassment, vague and fleeting, crossed Axel’s features as he waved his hand dismissively. He turned to focus resolutely on unpacking the grocery bags in the narrow kitchen, his eyes not quite meeting Roxas’s discreet gaze.
“Nope. Got it under control. Go lay down.”
Roxas shrugged, and obligingly turned to grab a box of tissues. He curled up on the couch, still feeling all kinds of miserable, but he had to admit that he was in better spirits now than an hour ago.
As he listened closely to the deliberate movements stemming from the kitchen, Roxas felt an oddly profound sense of contentment. Quietly, he was thankful for the feverish cloud weighing heavily at the front of his skull. It obscured the landscape of unspoken sentiment painting the space between them, abstract sweeping gestures that were hard to decipher even in moments of clarity.
A glowing realization managed to pierce through the veil and he had to wonder why it felt so hard to ignore: he and Axel, in the blur of the past few months, had grown used to having each other around, in every single way that counted.

Axel has no intention of staying in Destiny Islands. In the land of endless summer and carefree pleasure, he knows that he's bound to lose sight of himself again. Roxas realizes that despite being away from home, he has no choice but to face his feelings of unrequited love. The two of them find themselves at an illustrious Cove Point party. In the presence of vaulted ceilings and the cool indifference of unfamiliar crowds, Axel sees Roxas from across the room for the very first time.
(The M Rating finally becomes relevant: this chapter contains alcohol and recreational drug use)

Finally on a steady career path, Axel seems to have found peace with his new life in quiet unassuming Traverse Town. Yet he finds himself feeling restless and contemplates whether or not he should stay for the long haul or pick up and start over elsewhere. Things are thrown off course when someone from his past decides to pay him a visit.
On the Free Side, Chapter V: Sunrise
A Song For You (Pt. 3/4): Day 1
R: The world’s not perfect but it’s not that bad if we got each other, and that’s all we have. I will be your lover and I’ll hold your hand. You should know I’ll be there for you. (If We Have Each Other - Alec Benjamin)
A: Blue, blue, electric blue. That’s the color of my room where I will live. Blue, blue. I will sit right down, waiting for the gift of sound and vision. (Sound and Vision - David Bowie)
Even after years and worlds of distance, sometimes you’ll still be lucky enough to find your way back and meet in the middle.
This one goes out to the lovely @snowflake-of-destruction. You continue to inspire me every day in the best ways and I can’t even begin to tell you how grateful I am that we have crossed paths.
Roxas shifted in his seat to peer curiously at Axel, eyes wide enough that gazing into them felt like freefalling into the night sky.
“Is there really a point when you’ve lived so much of life that you’re no longer surprised by anything?”
Axel’s glowing smile was indescribable.
“I guess not. I think I was wrong to ever think that.”
They were on a reckless flight, sailing north along Starfall Drive, moonlight on the waters a rainfall of glitter in his peripheral vision.
Back in January, I decided I’d try my hand at writing again, just for fun. And I began working on an idea inspired by the west coast, nights of youthful recklessness, and endless tracks that always bring me back to the feeling of home, falling in love, getting your heart broken, and believing in yourself again.
Seven months later, I have five chapters written. After debating with myself back and forth, I think I’m happy enough with how it’s turned out that I’ve decided to post it :)
