Merlin looks up, eyes wide, so wide, and perhaps this is what the crowd has been waiting for, some sign that this thin slip of a boy can spin magic with his voice. For some sign that this is something more. And perhaps now the ropes will fall away and Merlin will walk through fire, the magic spilling from his fingers. Perhaps now Uther will fall from a throne that has always been too high.

From a screenwriting perspective, I think the reason they mentioned his brain stuff so much is because it's not realistic that things would have worked out like that. So they had to do something other than just gloss over it. It's one of the tricks to make the audience accept something...have the characters actually question it out loud, too.
I get that, but to be honest I was questioning (and enjoying) the muscles even more than the brain stuff. :D
