“Stephen!”
“Y/N, I have to go. Don’t make this harder than it has to be.”
The world might as well have been falling apart, but all you cared about was Stephen leaving after returning from Kamar-Taj just a few days ago. You never knew how long he would be gone or how much time you had together when he was here. You cherished every minute but it was now being cut short again. It would never make sense to you why every problem in the world seemed to be his problem to solve but little did you know how big of an issue this was.
“What is going on?” you said, chasing after him outside and stopping when you saw the chaos on the streets. Papers were flying through the air, there was dust everywhere and people were running in every direction. You followed Stephen, Wong, Tony, and Bruce out to the streets before Stephen turned around and made you go back to the Sanctum to stay safe.
“You cannot be here,” he said. If Stephen was anything, he was serious about your safety and you knew he wasn’t kidding.
“Okay. Please come home in one piece” There was fear in his eyes so you didn’t question him, only taking his face in your hands and kissing him one last time. It would be your last kiss together for the next five years.
“I’ll do my best, love.”
. . . . .
When the snap happened, you were in the Sanctum still, and Stephen had only been gone for 24 hours. You were shaking like a leaf and worrying if everything would be fine, only hoping that he would return safely. You two were never supposed to be together, always getting on each other’s nerves when you first worked together at the hospital but after his incident and you being a nurse in the ICU who cared for him, it just slowly developed. Even through his arrogance and the worst times he had ever experienced, you were there for him. Christine had abandoned him and rightfully so, Stephen had hurt her in more ways than a person could handle. But he had changed since then. And you found each other again.
When the snap happened, there was a wave of energy that you felt pass through your body and you just took it as a shiver. However, 15 seconds later you heard screaming outside. You jumped up from Stephen’s bed in his room at the Sanctum and looked out the window.
It was almost like deja vu from yesterday. Except for this time, people were disappearing into thin air. It looked like dust and there was only a memory of them left.
All that ran through your mind was Stephen. You didn’t know where he was, how to contact him, or even if he was already dead. You stayed inside, frantically running around the Sanctum looking for someone who may have some answers. Almost on cue, sorcerers from the London and Hong Kong Sanctums entered and were obviously looking for other sorcerers.
“Where’s Master Strange?” one of them asked.
“I-I don’t…” you started to feel the tears in your eyes and some were on the verge of falling down your cheeks. One of them saw this and signaled to not be so forward asking. By your reaction, they could tell you didn’t know either but one sorcerer spoke to the others. He was already gone.
. . . . .
It was like those apocalypse movies you’d watch where the world changes so much after a catastrophe. You never thought it would actually happen to you though. IN five years you’d started to study the ways of sorcerers, and had traveled all around the world becoming a sorcerer. It was never your plan, but you never returned to the hospital after that day that you found out Stephen was gone. You couldn’t have that reminder of the way things used to be before Thanos happened.
Stephen was your everything before the decimation but now that it had been five years, memories were all you had left and you had almost forgotten the sound of his voice. You saw him everywhere you went and felt him near you.
That day was like any other day, studying in the library where Wong used to bring you books before out of nowhere, Wong himself appeared. You almost passed out from sheer panic and fear.
You hit your fists together and out up your shields, knowing that it couldn’t possibly be Wong. This was a trick. It had to be. Wong looked over at you and smiled, something that he never happened until that moment. It couldn’t be real.
“Stand down.” He looked at you, not believing what he was seeing either. You as a sorcerer? It would’ve never happened five years ago but he knew something had happened. You didn’t have a lot of time to explain after a short reunion until he asked where Stephen was.
“I don’t know.” It hurt just to even talk about him but then it occurred to you that if Wong was back, it is completely possible that Stephen has returned as well. You don’t know how or why, but all you needed was to see him and make sure he was okay.
“We will find him.”
“Find who?” Behind Wong, a portal opened and Stephen stood in the middle of it, with a strange group of people behind him. One was wearing a body-suit with a large spider on the front of it and he couldn’t be more than sixteen, an older man with a jacket on a had blasters and two others, both who you couldn’t even begin to describe.
Your breath hitched in your throat. Stephen looked the exact same way he did that day that he left you. He had a small cut under his eye but it was like a dream. You surged forward as he smiled at you and jumped into his arms, still not quite believing this was all real.
“So, let me get this straight? Who taught you everything you know?” he asked, obviously curious about you becoming a sorcerer.
Wong spoke up, stopping the reunion. “We don’t have time Strange. SOmething has happened at the complex.”
“Is everyone there? Mr. Stark, Captain Rogers?” the young boy asked walking up next to Stephen.
“We can only hope. Who are we fighting?” Stephen asked. Wong did a spell to look at the complex in the present and saw Thanos’ ship, with Thanos sitting in the rubble of what was the Avengers Complex. Stephen must’ve seen it as well, already devising a plan.
“We need all the help we can get.”
. . . . .
“Stephen, I’m not sitting this one out. I can help.”
“I cannot lose you, we just got each other back.” He had that same look of fear in his eyes that you remember from that horrible day five years ago in the city.
“Which is exactly why you need my help. Let me help you.”
You were back on Titan, about to open the portals across the universe to bring everyone to the Complex and win this fight against Thanos. However, Stephen wanted you safe again.
He sighed, “Fine. Just please be careful.” He walked forward and took your hands, kissing them both and then your forehead. You leaned your forehead into his chest, letting one tear fall just from the overwhelming feeling of having him back again.
You stood next to him as your portal opened and you stepped through, seeing some Avengers already there and ready to fight.
Whatever it takes.
. . . . .
“He was a hero,” you said. You stood next to Stephen at Tony’s funeral. He was not prepared to say goodbye to him. He wasn’t fond of Tony mostly because of how much they were alike, but he was a good man.
“I know. He deserved more.”
“You will honor him by continuing to protect what he did for all these years. You all will.”
Stephen looked over at you, his eyes glistening from the loss of his fellow Avenger and intertwined his fingers with yours.
“Even through those five years you were alone, I can’t believe you waited for me.”
You smiled at him, wiping the tear from his face with your free hand.
“I don’t think we were meant to be, but I wouldn’t have wanted to wait for anyone but you.”
