Summary
When Querl chooses Lyle over his own people, they get more than a little angry. Fortunately for him, he is very very loved.
Excerpt
When Querl came to his senses he was met with the apathetic boorish stares of three Coluan council members. Blinking against the bright lights that haloed his captors and his own hazy mind, Querl quickly assessed his situation starting from what he remembered last.
Right. He remembered.
That would do it.
"Querl Dox, Brainiac 5 of Colu," began one, her flat green eyes smoldered as she repressed a sneer. "Do you know why you are here?"
Querl couldn't remember her name, but he did recognize her face and how she always looked like she was just one badly perceived comment away from breaking. At her question he straightened up in his chair and found he was shackled to it, hands and ankles like a common criminal.
"Brainiac 5, do you know why you are here?" she pressed again and Querl saw a flash of her white upper teeth as she sneered his name.
"You would have to ask my mother that question to determine the reasoning behind her reproduction choices," he answered bluntly as he stared her down impassively.
"Sarcasm?!" she hissed as her expressionless facade cracked, spilling her tension everywhere. "On top of everything you have done, you now dare to face us with sarcasm?!"
Another council member, an older man Querl recognized as being called Phari Wex, silenced her with a touch to her shoulder but he never lifted his stern gaze from Querl. "I don't believe you understand the severity of the situation you are in, Brainiac 5. Your scurrilous jesting will not be tolerated in this court, do you understand?"
"It's hard not to jest when I'm starring at a circus of monkeys," Querl seethed and the third councilmen slapped him across his pale green face. It stung more than hurt, Coluans weren't known for physical prowess and the councilmen rubbed his hand, nursing it before he wiped it on his robes in disgust.
