It had been one of those long days. Riza had intended on joining Second Lieutenant at the firing range after her lunch break to observe the new recruits and practice sharpshooting together. As always a distraction required her attention and deterred that plan and forced them to accommodate.
So they met after their hours had officially ended. Leaving the Colonel in his office wasn’t a concern of hers. He’d was wrapping up his paperwork, albeit begrudgingly, but wrapping it up nevertheless. Her target practice was going well, and despite the interruption at the peek of her day nothing in the foreseeable future could go wrong.
She was just putting away her things in her locker when a desk Sergeant came racing towards her, huffing and panting when he skidded to a halt in front of her.
And his news made her heart stop.
It was both a godsend and the worst thing that Havoc nearly forced her into letting her drive. At least he’d be more focused than he but he just couldn’t get there fast enough. It wasn’t his fault, she knew that, but the churning in her stomach and her hands clenched into fists so hard that her nails might have been drawing blood as they drove to the hospital.
They arrive and Riza was tearing out of the vehicle before Havoc had parked, but she had the sense of mind to wait until he was nearly idling. None of the nurses on call knew of anything but they were aware of their pending arrival, directing Havoc to the other men waiting in the waiting room and giving Riza the Colonel’s forms to fill out while she waited for any new developments.
Help arrived quickly, some with help from the first of the two accidents since sirens could already be heard before the much more life threatening collision. But it was also with the urban life of Central that brought on the hastiness. If it was East City, where things were a bit tranquil, reaction time might have been on the slower side. Then again, it was much less likely for a car accident of this magnitude to occur.
But thankfully paramedics and rescue were quick upon arriving at the scene as well. Maybe it was helpful that they recognized the Colonel’s uniform regardless if it was now tattered and covered in blood. Hard labor worked at freeing him from the vehicle while medical staff – after making sure he was breathing, if even barely – fitted him with a neck brace while preparing an IV, blood, and a stretcher.
However, when Roy came along, this frantic scene was already past him and a new one was only just beginning. Eyes cracked open slowly only to be squeezed shut from the brightness of the hospital hallway. He could hear varies voices around him, but he couldn’t find his own despite pitifully trying to part his lips. “Sir, stay with us. You are in good hands.” It was a calming voice amidst some of the rushed tones around him, sending orders left and right. Probably doctors giving commands to nurses. He must look as bad, if not worse, as he felt. Everything hurt. It was getting to the point where it was so excruciating that he just began to feel numb. Reasonably it was his body’s defenses kicking in which just made him want to go back to sleep.
“Ma’am, please, you have to wait here.” There was that voice again. Roy made the effort to open his eyes again sluggishly and barely, just to give himself enough room to lad his dark hues on a woman. Blonde hair tied up neatly and a blue military suit. She wore such a grief stricken expression as she looked his way. Was she distressed over him? For some reason it made his heart ache. Fingers twitched upward from their spot on the rolling stretch in attempt to reach out to her. Exhausted as he was, he felt the urge to comfort her and tell her things would be alright, even if he honestly wasn’t sure himself.
She disappeared from his site when doors closed before them. The movement of the bed he was on halted signaling their arrival. Men in white and with masks on surrounded him and he closed his eyes once again. He instantly felt hands against his body as they began their work and he heard yet another comforting voice speaking calmly to him, but all he wanted to do now was rest. So at last, he let his mind drift as he feel into an unshakable slumber.
Many hours later, when all was said and done in the hectic emergency room, a doctor cleaning himself up before escorting himself to the military soldiers that had been confined to the waiting room as he operated on their comrade. He knew that dispatch had called for someone to alert their headquarters of the accident before the man arrived in his care and nurses had debriefed him about the completed paperwork so upon arriving in front of a blonde female and male, he could only assume that they were the ones. “Ah, hello,” cracked a weary voice, fatigued from the nonstop working, but he carried himself professionally even if age was slowly catching up with him. “You must be here for Mustang?”
