@r1art, a Johannesburg-based street artist, uses the city as a canvas to interact with urbanites, highlighting how shared space is a personal and evolving experience.
He applies chevrons, South Africa’s most popular shape on road signs, along with wood pallets and compact discs, to design mosaic-like patterns. These patterns, based on the time of day and direction of eye contact, continue to transform and take on new dimensions and visual characteristics, much like the rhythm of Joburg’s pulsing city streets.
For those in Joburg, have you encountered r1’s work?
