you woke up much earlier than you had planned, a little over two hours before your alarm was scheduled to go off.
you felt like an electrocuted bundle of nerves, you knew you’d be incapable of getting any actual sleep, so you decided to get a head start on your first day of medical school and go through your morning routine.
you had poured your blood, sweat, and tears into your application for medical school throughout your undergrad years. you dedicated a majority of your time completing clinical and non-clinical volunteering, research for your neuroscience lab, working shifts as an emt and medical assistant, and studying for four consecutive months to make sure you’d be well prepared to take the mcat.
you recalled how overwhelming and draining it all felt, like you’d burn out and lose your spark for medicine before you even got a taste of fulfilling your dream.
and now here you stood in the middle of your dorm, preparing for your first day of class at your top-pick for medical school. fuck, it all felt so great.
as you stepped out of your dorm building, you took in a deep breath, savoring the pale blue light of the early morning sky.
it was a quick, ten minute walk to get to campus. you set up a little study station for yourself on the fourth floor of the library. you thought it’d be nice to review the syllabus for your first class to better prepare yourself for what to expect.
an hour into reviewing the syllabus and refreshing your memory of basic anatomy and physiology, a soft voice interrupted your focus.
“hey… uh—is this seat taken?”
you looked up to see a tall, lanky guy, with dirty blond hair and round glasses framing his blue eyes.
“no, it’s free,” you answered, confused on why he’d opt for the seat in front of you when the floor was mostly barren.
“cool, thanks,” he replied, dropping his bag down. “i’m jackson. i go by jack for short,” he introduced, his hand outstretched towards you.
you offered your name in return and shook his hand.
“first day jitters, huh? me too, i barely slept,” he nervously rambled.
“same here,” you agreed, offering him a small smile.
“you’re going over anatomy right? do you also have professor lee at eight?”
“yeah, actually… i do.”
“oh great! we can head over to lecture together in a bit then! it’d be nice to walk in with someone,” he suggested.
you gave him a small shrug, “works for me.”
by the time your anatomy lecture was about to begin, you had gotten to know jackson, or “jack”, pretty well. he was a bit of an eager beaver, but he seemed harmless, and it was clear that you gave him a sense of relief of having a friend on the first day of class.
the two of you sat in the middle of the lecture room, you excitedly eyed the room as you took in the sight of your peers filling in the seats.
“five more minutes before i start the lecture,” professor lee informed from the front of the room.
just a minute before your anatomy professor moved to lock the door, a student strolled in. curly auburn hair, freckled skin, coffee in hand, and an air around him like he already knew he’d dominate the course.
he took the empty seat to your left, before glancing over to subtly stare at the profile of your face.
“jack abbot,” he introduced himself, a smug smile on his stupidly attractive face. you definitely didn’t notice his beefy arms straining against the fabric of his shirt either.
your new friend craned his neck over, enthusiastically introducing you and himself, “…and i’m jackson! or jack for short. is yours short for something?” he asked. “maybe you're also a fellow jackson? or something spunky like jackaroni?” jackson chuckled to himself.
“it’s just jack,” he replied blandly, his focus still on you.
“oh—we met during orientation!” jackson exclaimed.
“alright! attention class! there’s going to be a couple stacks of paper being passed around. i want you to grab one from each stack,” your professor instructed, cutting jackson’s rambling short.
as your professor ran through the sheets he prepared, you followed along with your colored highlighters, marking down the important information.
“mind if i borrow the blue one?” jack asked, already reaching into your pencil case before you could answer.
you gave him an unimpressed look as he grabbed your blue highlighter. “sure, jack,” you answered.
he flashed you a small smile, “atta girl.”
you held back the urge to roll your eyes as he continued to reach over into your pencil case, neatly assigning certain colors to specific topics as the lecture went on.
after three hours of sitting through the lecture, you let out a relieved sigh as professor lee finally began to wrap up. you expected to receive a lot of information, but actually processing all of it was another challenge on its own.
“when’s your anatomy lab?” jack asked, his voice low and quiet.
“later this afternoon at five,” you answered softly. “why?” you asked curiously, moving to pack up your supplies.
“i’ll see you at five then, lab partner,” jack replied, returning the highlighters he borrowed.
you shot him a quick side-eye, before the two of you sat quietly for the next few minutes, listening to professor lee give some final advice on how to prepare for the course before dismissing the class.
you did indeed end up seeing jack abbot waiting outside your anatomy lab with his backpack slung over one shoulder. his hazel eyes lit up the second he spotted you as if you had offered him a million dollars.
“what happened with jack 2.0?”
“you mean jackson? his lab was scheduled at three,” you informed as you walked into the lab, the smell of formaldehyde invading your nose.
jack quickly followed right after you, moving so that his shoulder brushed against yours. as you moved to hang up your bag, jack reached over and pushed yours into an empty slot on the shelf next to his.
“thanks,” you muttered before turning to find an empty lab table. “you know, jack 2.0 is a pretty shitty nickname,” you added.
“what do you mean? it’s a perfectly good nickname,” jack scoffed, taking a seat next to you.
“why can’t you be jack 2.0 then?” you challenged.
“because… i’m obviously going to be number one to you.”
“right… well if jackson gets a nickname then you get to have one too.”
“oh yeah? and what do i get, hm?”
you paused, your eyes scanning his expectant face as you conjured up a name suitable for him.
“i’ll go with rabbit,” you declared.
“rabbit? where the hell did you get that from?” he huffed, disappointed that you didn’t assign him something catchy or cool.
“jack abbot kinda sounds like jackrabbit… and we can shorten jackrabbit to just rabbit,” you explained, holding back your laughter.
“ha-ha, very clever,” he grumbled. “i’ll have you know that jackrabbits are actually classified as hares, not rabbits.”
“hmm… that’s a very fun fact, rabbit,” you teased, enjoying the exasperation in his expression.
