        among  every  single  emotion  that  seemed  to  pile  into  letha’s  head  all  at  once ,    anger  only  seemed  to    simmer    in  the  background .    though  at  first  she  pushes  him  back ,    frustration    knitting  her  brows  together ,    balling  her  hands  into  fists  at  her  sides  and  taking    everything    inside  of  her  to  not  pound  them  into  his  chest .    his  decision  to  leave  had  been  his  alone ,    though  one  letha  found  to  be  particularly    stupid .

        frustrated    (  because  that  seems  to  be  the  only  word  that  comes  close  to  describing    truly    how  she  felt  )    as  she  may  have  been ,    letha  couldn’t  help  the  feeling  of    relief    growing  in  the  pit  of  her  stomach .    relief  in  the  fact  that  no  matter  how   dumb    he’d  been  to  leave  in  the  first  place ,    he  had  come  back  in    one  piece .    so  even    with    this  sense  of  vexation  in  her  chest ,    she  can’t  stop  arms  from  wrapping  around  his  chest !    words  a  soft  mumble  against  his  shirt ,    tone  light  yet    somehow  serious    all  at  the  same  time .      ❝     idiot ,    you  scared  the    hell    out  of  me .    you’re  all  in    one  piece ,    right ?     ❞

     ❛  I  DON’T  KNOW  IF  ANYONE  OF  US  COULD  EVER  GO  BACK.  ❜   things  would  never  be  the  same,  no  matter  how  they  tried  to  rebuild  and  grow.  maybe  it  was  a  bleak  outlook,  brooke  ever  a  pessimist.  there  would  never  be  9  to  5  jobs,  white  fences  with  perfect  families.   the  skeleton  of  the  world  now  would  be  a  grave  reminder,  how  far  gone  they’ve  all  really  come.  no  one  remains  innocent,  their  hands  all  too  stained  in  scarlet.  but  those  things  were  necessary  for  survival,  to  fight  for  another  day  ---  at  least  that’s  how  she  helped  herself  sleep  at  night.  ❛  could  you  really  see  yourself  in  court?  a  suit  after  this?  ❜  it  brings  a  coy  smile  to  her  lips,  a  quick  laugh  from  within.  ❛  i  don’t  think  i  could  ever  go  back.  ❜  she  was  no  longer  the  rookie  hesitant  to  pull  a  trigger,  that  woman  had  died  long   ago. 

 thoughts  are  pushed   away   as  fingers  grasp  eagerly  at  cans  found  on  back  of  dust  covered  shelf.  flash  light  shone  over  to  reveal  mixed  vegetables,  excitement  given  at   discovery.  ❛  i’ll  take  these  any  day  over  pickled  beets.  ❜    cans  are  shoved  in  pack,  hues  back  to  scanning  for  anything  that  hasn’t  already  been  scavenged  or  ruined.  ❛  what  i’d  give  anything  for  is  a  smore.  the  youth  center  used  to  do  these  big  camp  outs  in  the  fall,  it  was  the  best.  ❜

          GUILT  RIDDEN   /   POSTURE  SHARP.   the  words  are  unexpected  given  the  nature  of  the  other’s  wound  &  reasoning  for  it,  cause  of  fight  standing  just  out  of  earshot.   there’s  been  time  for  contemplation,  time  for  scenario  to  replay  on  loop  in  mind’s  eye  now  ranch  has  been  lost  to  undead  foe.   night’s  companionship  brings  with  it  doubts  of  both  actions  taken  &  his  own  inaction   —   were  situation  to  repeat  he’d  still  choose  to  knock  the  gun  from  deadly  path,  adamant  on  saving  jake  from  bearing  such  weight  as  murder  brings   (   he’s  familiar  with  his  own  burden,  those  killed  by  his  hand  impossible  to  forget   ). 

          perhaps,  instead,  he’d  have  pulled  the  trigger  himself.

          ❛   shit,  man,  it’s  the  least  i  can  do  for   —   y’know              ❜   harsh  huff  of  air,  shoulders  deflating,   ❛   how’re  you  holding  up   ?   ❜
