I have a headcanon of how Robby met Jack and the expanse of their relationship if anyone wants to hear it
hi hi hiii mutual!
i love to make and send prompts so here you go :D
i've seen a lot of ppl hc that jack is the overly energised one in their relationship but robby's constant self soothing in canon (rubbing his hands together, rubbing his beard, the back of his neck, fiddling with his stethoscope, etc.*) gives me an inkling that that man would benefit from a run around the ED or having one of those little one-person trampolines in the on-call room to self regulate. so, i wonder what this dynamic looks like outside of the pitt, whether that be at home or on a walk or going out with the staff... bonus points if someone walks in on robby doing something random like jumping jacks while jack is just standing there 🧍♂️ talking like nothing's going on (and/or counting them for him)
*lowkey this may just be noah wyle's mannerisms seeping into robby's characterisation, with wyle's undiagnosed adhd lol (his claim not mine) | also there's a gif that shows this dynamic off but bc this is very long i'll add it in a reblog or dm it to you if you want :)
have a nice day <3
I always see Robby as being less talkative then Jack like Jack can ramble on and on and on about nothing.
but Robby is definitely more physically energized in a way. He does fidget a lot, pacing frequently. Jack knows that if they're having a conversation on the phone that Robby is pacing back and forth in his living room.
He'll dance to music, nothing flashy, but bobs along, sways, moves his body in some way to work the energy out.
When med students starts talking about fidget toys Robby bought himself some.
I like thinking that the only time he stays still is when he's reading or when Jack has him in his lap, carding his fingers through his hair, but even then his mind is always running a mile a minute.
He probably played some kind of sport as a kid (I see baseball maybe track or swimming) but as he got older he turned more and more to books because they became the only real way he could slow himself down.
Jack always has to be doing something but physically he can be very stoic meanwhile Robby is always going going going.
He's just quieter than Jack
unless you get him talking about something he's excited about then he won't stfu (and Jack loves every single second of it)
He's def ADHD (Yes I take this from Noah as well especially after watching several interviews where he never quite looks people in the eyes when he talks and is always shifting and moving. I always think of his interview with Dr. Mike for this)
Jack and Robby don’t get to share a bed much at the beginning of their relationship. They're on opposite schedules, they don’t live together yet. Sure, they touch a lot and are in each others space all the time that they do spend together, but that part isn’t new. They were like that as best friends, too.
In the decades of friendship, they have shared a bed a few times. It was always a nice appropriate distance between them. So it comes as quite a surprise to Robby that Jack, after that line into dating is crossed, turns out to be the clingiest sleeper he has ever been with.
Jack basically wraps himself around him and does not loosen his grip no matter how deep into sleep he is. Robby isn’t really complaining, but with Jack he is never not the little spoon, absolutely squished against Jack's chest. He bundles him up and suddenly the stupidly tall 50-something is just a little thing in his boyfriend's arms. If he isn't the little spoon, he's on his back, Jack half on top of him, pinning him into place like a living weighted and heated blanket. Two for one deal.
Robby always thought he liked his space when sleeping. Turns out he doesn’t.
Rabbot headcanon (Jack’s guilty pleasure)
Jack’s guilty pleasure is reality tv shows and recently he’s invested in RuPaul’s drag race. He loves making comments while watching, passionate and loud as if rooting for his favorite sports team, one hand holding a beer and the other one snapping and beaming as he yells “go queen!”.
Robby finds it to be the most endearing thing ever. Especially after that one time, Jack reached out for his hand across the couch mid-show, squeezed him in a way that Robby knew he was getting emotional.
“Wish us kids had this freedom to be who we are back in our time. It would have saved so many lives.”
Jack and Robby flirt nonstop, which is fine, except they're horrible at it.
So that's why they're on opposite shifts now
Random Rabbot headcannon: Jack discovered that Robby sleeps with the Golden Girls playing because it they make him think of his Buble.
Jack's always liked the show so when Robby starts stressing, Jack puts in a Golden Girls dvd
Jack finds a photo album of Robby as a teenager. In most, he's all punk/grunge with cigarette burns on his fingers and dyed hair.
But he's always smiling. His eyes crinkling, nose scrunched, rabbit teeth pulling his lip.
He's wearing eyeliner, black feather earrings, and a The Cure t shirt, helping carry a couch into a tired looking house. The photo lopsided and blurry with the caption "Mikhail, dearest grandson."
Or
"My growing boys " next to a photo of a mohawk, plaid covered Robby, holding a scruffy looking dog.
Jack flips through pages and pages of a young man that looks like the world is weighing on his shoulders, but for the person behind the camera, he'll always have a smile.
It makes him fall even more in love.
When he asks Robby, he blushes, mumbling about getting his Bubbe a new camera one year with his meager summer savings. She loved taking photos, and he could never tell her no, or to stop.
Robby then pulls out another album, all of his grandmother.
Her laughing, her dancing, her holding up a plate of food or an unpotted plant.
He tells Jack about taking as many as he can once she got sick because he realized why she loved taking photos.
"Memories are all we have of each other in the end." He whispers, thumbing a picture of a gap toothed kid holding the hand of a soft smiled woman.
Jack selects a few to hang on the wall, despite Robby hemming and hawing about how embarrassing it is.
(Robby's favorite photo is of an eighteen year old Jack wearing a bright orange crop top, holding a football, and laughing with his brothers. Red hair wild and curly, looking for all the world like he'll be this happy and free forever.)
Robby reads classic literature, educational texts with some fiction thrown in there now and then
Jack reads trashy romance novels, and whatever book Lena recommends him
They both read medical publications. Whoever finds the weirdest and grosses gets head first.
