"Punk" Quarter horse gelding (liver chestnut rabicano)
Heaven Sent - Warmblood Colt
I’ve got one for you! This is my 7 year old Rocky Mountain mare. She’s all black, and only fades a little bit in the summer, less than the other black horses I’ve owned. Her mother and full brother are both chocolates, and her sire was black like her. The catch is she has this roaning (?) mostly just on her flanks. It’s more obvious in the summer, and I think has been getting more widespread as she ages, but very very slowly. Is she the world’s slowest grey? Thoughts?
The grey allele is dominant, so she can't be grey if none of her parents were (though there are horses that start to go grey later than typical).
Uhh actually it's reminding me of rabicano? Sort of? Does she have any white hairs at the base of her tail as well? If so, it's a rabicano pattern for sure. If not, it could still be a minimal expression of rabicano, especially since bay and black horses often have less white than chestnut horses. But it could also be something else that I don't know about. Unfortunately we haven't identified the mutation(s) that cause rabicano, so it's not testable yet.
For reference:
Extensive rabicano: roaning on the flanks and belly with a ribcage pattern + "skunk tail"
Minimal rabicano: Koning Albert, who has been tested W20/W20, but not all W20/W20 horses are rabicano, and not all rabicano horses are W20/W20.
