You are invited to the yearly Ridgeline Aviary Ceremonium, in which we will honor the legendaries of the family regions and welcome the new year. As you know, this event is important for sanctuary donations and brings in funds that keep us a safe place for wild Pokémon.

You may not bring any guests. I know who you hang out with on Ula’Ula and I know they will ruin the event (and my donors’ opinion of the sanctuary). Maeve is coming with her trainer friend, only allowed because of the name Hella has made for herself. She is at least somewhat respectable.

In lieu of last year: the dress code is formal. Black. Tie. If this isn’t followed I will feed you to Rin and she will hyperbeam you to live with Lunala. This is an important night for me and I expect you to show up. Or else.

Winter is the worst time of year. I want to take Bryony for a ride but the ash would hurt her, it’s bad enough that I’m out here without a mask. The sun is down and the ocean is dark and I can’t even see Mt. Pyre.

I’ll have to be satisfied with sitting beneath my parents’ trees.

[Maeve sits on her bed with clothes and hair still caked in ash. Tears carve tracks in the ash on her face and she stares at the sooty smears on her bedsheets. She picks up a lock from the bowl at her bedside and tosses it from one hand to the other. She times her breaths to each pass of the object, the weight soothing in her palms, lessening the twitches of her fingers.

She hears muffled crying through her door and stops stimming. Her chin crumples and she squeezes the lock until it creases her palm.

Arceus. I’m being such a terrible girlfriend.

She stands and wipes the lock on her bedsheets before placing it back in the bowl full of trinkets. Then, she walks out of the door.]
