Happy International Women's Day the Women Directors of Heartland!
Despite some high-profile women behind the camera, directing is still very much a man's industry, according to new data.
Pictured: Alison Reid (3 episodes), Gail Harvey (6 episodes), Winnifred Jong (2 episodes), Megan Follows (5 episodes), Anne Wheeler (2 episodes), Norma Bailey (3 episodes), Rachel Leiterman (5 episodes), Kristin Lehman (1 episode), Eleanore Lindo (14 episodes), Dawn Wilkinson (2 episodes), Tina Grewal (2 episodes), Jill Carter (2 episodes) and Michelle Morgan (1 episode).
Heartland: 14 seasons - 30 directors overall, 13 of them women (~43%)
Season 12 Production - Day 56 {8.28.18}:
It's the last day of block 4 and 6 scenes from episode 1207 (directed by Chris Potter) will be followed by 5 scenes from episode 1208 (directed by Rachel Leiterman. The sun rose at 6:42am MT and on set they're looking for a high of 21°C. 👍🏼🙂👍🏼
The 1st scene today has something to do with an outhouse at the Heartland Ranch and a wager that was made. So it has nothing to do with the Dude Ranch outhouses you occasionally see when the cameras are rolling there. What could be going on? 🤔😳🤔
Even though it's the last day of filming scenes from episode 1207, some of the very first scenes of the episode have to be shot today. Those feature Georgie taking Phoenix over some jumps. 🐴👍🏼🐴
Lots of scenes are being filmed in many places today! From the yard to the jumping ring to the driveway to the back field to the gallows gate, the ranch set offers all sorts of excellent locations where Heartland scenes can be shot. 😎🎥😎
With Amy's intuitive nature in dealing with horses and with Ty's veterinary abilities, Heartland's favourite couple are well equipped to handle most equine problems, but a horse in episode 1208 proves to be quite a challenge! 🐴👍🏼🐴
The day and block has totally wrapped. Both Jade (@madisoncheeatow) & Caleb (Kerry James) were only in the first scene today and by the time filming finished tonight Kerry was back home in BC & Madison was flying to Ontario. 😳👍🏼✈️👍🏼
My Interview with Heartland Writers, part 13
Question: What do you feel is your part as a TV show writer when it comes to bringing representation to the media in terms of gender, age, ethnicity, national and regional identity, social issues and events, etc.? Do you have conversations about these things in the writer’s room?
Mark Haroun: I think it’s important that the stories and characters we’re writing are representative of the diversity of people that live in this country. I think it’s also important that behind the scenes there’s a diversity of voices. The creative work on Heartland is lead by incredibly talented women like our Showrunner Heather Conkie and directors like Rachel Leiterman, Eleanore Lindo and Megan Follows. In fact, for the last several seasons women have directed half of all Heartland episodes.
