Mini-Rant About Sensationalist Science

So, an acquaintance of mine posted an article to her Facebook about radiation resulting from the Fukushima nuclear plant (can be found here). The article pretty much says that radiation is reaching the western coasts of the US and Canada at rates high enough to cause damage. They specifically quote that amounts of radiation at "2000 percent" of the EPA allowable dose has leeched into our water taken from the oceans and entering our ecosystem through rainwater. They claim that this is serious news, and that all should be wary of pretty much any animal or plant which has had any contact with this environment. To put this in perspective, I wanted to see how much radiation 2000% of the EPA max is, and then give my own non-professional NE critique on how this would effect us. 

According to the EPA (you can see it here), the maximum allowable beta emitter dose in drinking water is 4 millirems (Iodine-131, a beta-emitter mentioned in the article, was a big fraction of what came out of Fukushima at the time of the accident). This, when converted to another unit of dose, is 40 microsieverts. Multiplying this by 2000% (if we assume that the article is true), we have 0.8 millisieverts. A normal yearly background dose (85% percent being from natural sources all around us everyday, and the rest being mostly medical scans) is around 3.65 millisieverts. [Note: this is taken from an article and reference chart on this page, complete with sources.] So, that dose is much less than what we all see on a normal yearly basis. Even one CT scan is 5.8 millisieverts, and no truly endangering adverse effects arise out of that amount (unless, of course, you got a CT every day or something - highly unlikely).

Our bodies have amazing abilities to self-repair from radiation doses, as long as they are not done in extremely high levels in a short amount of time (i.e. over 1000 times more than a yearly dose in a single shot). Discounting natural predispositions to certain cancers, this slightly higher dose level coming from Fukushima (weakened by spread in travel) would have no worse effect on people living on the West coast than what they normally absorb, in my opinion. The maximum allowable dose from the EPA is a guideline set to be much lower than what humans can handle, and to ensure that absolutely no chance of damage could come from water sources. Even an increase of 2000% is still a pittance compared to a damaging amount. 

Sensationalist stories only serve to increase reader count and fear. The reality of a situation like this is much less dire. Eat your meat/plants, and drink your water/dairy. You'll be fine. Always do try to know the origin of your food, but that's just generic food safety.

Radon Measurements by Etched Track Detectors: Applications in Radiation Protection, Earth Sciences and the Environment Exposure to radon gas, which is present in the environment naturally, constitutes over half the radiation dose received by the general public annually. At present, the most widely used method of measuring radon concentration levels throughout the world, both in dwellings and in the field, is by etched track detectors - also known as Solid State Nuclear Detectors (SSNTDs). Although this is the most widely used method and is also the simplest and the cheapest, yet there is at present no book available on the market globally, devoted exclusively or largely to the methodology of, and dealing with the results obtained by, the SSNTD technique. The present book fills this important gap in the coverage of radon measurements. Individual chapters of the book are contributed by some of the most prominent and active research workers in the world in the SSNTD discipline as well as in the field of radon measurements.
