Correspondent Élisa Serret was doing a television hit from Washington about U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to Israel — a trip that came soon after Israeli forces launched strikes on Hamas targets in Qatar. Asked by Christian Latreille, the host of news program Sur le terrain, why the U.S. has not distanced itself from Israel in the wake of that military action, Serret said in French "the Israelis, in fact the Jews, finance a lot of American politics" and control a "big machine."

The NHL will no longer be shown on CBC after it and national rights-holder Rogers Sportsnet were unable to come to agreement on a new sublicensing deal that would have allowed the public broadcaster to air games on its Saturday program Hockey Night in Canada. The CBC, which began televising NHL games in 1952, had operated under that agreement since Rogers Sportsnet acquired the league’s Canadian rights in 2013 for $5.2 billion. Rogers Sportsnet renewed those rights with a 12-year, $11.2-billion deal to begin in October. The CBC and Rogers Sportsnet announced the change in a joint statement Tuesday.

“After a successful 12-year partnership, Sportsnet and CBC today announced the public broadcaster will no longer carry NHL broadcasts after the current season as it moves forward with a new sports programming strategy following the unprecedented success of the Milano/Cortina Olympic Games,” the statement said. “Watching hockey on Saturday night is a time-honoured tradition for Canadians, and Sportsnet is privileged to continue delivering that tradition. This has been a terrific partnership, and both parties look forward to continued opportunities to collaborate in the future.” In its place, CBC will launch a new Saturday night prime time show on CBC and streaming on CBC Gem, featuring Canadian athletes competing at home and at the biggest events around the world.

Sad day for Canada (and Americans who preferred CBC's coverage, especially if you had CBC available): The venerable Saturday night institution known as Hockey Night In Canada (HNIC) won't back on CBC next year.

your blog is so refreshing! i live in central ontario & am of scottish/english & french-canadian ancestry, with acadian roots on my father's side as well as a bit of kanien'kehá:ka. i love seeing a family story like mine!

unfortunately, my grandfather didn't teach his children french, & therefore i wasn't taught anything but what the ontario govt. mandates. i'm unsure if you've spoken about this before because you grew up speaking french, but do you know of any decent sources for learning québécois french? my grandfather is fluent and someday i'd at least like to have one conversation with him in his first language. :-(

For starters in your immersion to Quebec French, try watching shows and movies on Tout.TV’s platform :) it’s all Quebec content, much of it with turns of phrases, some with French from France sometimes.

To learn it, you can try https://mauril.ca/en/. You can watch CBC and Radio Canada programming and learn that way with local Quebec programs.

@wanderingfrench on youtube has whole segments on Quebec slang, turns of phrases and expressions.

Otherwise, your biggest key is exposure!

The whole Ricardo Trogi film series (1981, 1987, 1991, 1995) are excellent for hearing Côte-Nord Quebec French, from the main character’s mother. And they’re hilarious films! Bon Cop Bad Cop is another good one, a good poke at Ontario vs Quebec linguistic differences. Other movies and shows like La Grande Séduction, Les Pays d’en Haut, Infoman, all have their variations of Quebecois french. Quebecois French accents vary subtly by region: Montreal vs Saguenay vs Côte-Nord, everything is so regional.

Ex: a book I want to get is ‘la langue de Charlevoix et du Saguenay Lac Saint Jean: un français qui a du caractère” by Claude Verreault and Claude Simard. It’s a ethnographic study of Saguenay dialects. I’ve noticed there’s also lots of dictionaries for Acadian French. Believe me, I have to slow down to understand it myself.

For a quick Quebec French dictionary, try Usito.usherbrooke.ca. Whenever you see a word you’re not familar with while watching Radio Canada with subtitles in French, look it up there. They accept slang!

Of course, talking with your family and even other Franco-Ontarians can get you closer to getting comfy with French conversations. Even just a coffee conversation helps.

You would think that Radio-can forgot how to place them at a good time... we missed segments and they cut in the middle of their own commentators sentences!!
