Hey, I know you get a lot of asks and a lot of fan mail, but I was wondering if you had any experience with FIV+ cats? My husband and I work with them almost exclusively and I know I love them but wanted to see what you thought of them?

I’m actually a very small blogger tbh. I have a much larger audience than I ever expected---- I kind of thought this would just be a place where I could record and keep track of my work. I have under 10k followers and I suspect a lot of those are old, unused accounts, ngl.

anyway, yes, I’ve worked with FIV+ kitties before. Feline immunodeficiency virus is not the big scary monster we used to think it was. We now know that cats with FIV, while still requiring some special care, can live full and happy lives. We used to think that FIV could be spread in lots of different ways, but now we know it’s primarily spread by deep bite wounds. For cats that are neutered and well-socialized, deep bites are really uncommon.

thankfully, more and more rescues are willing to take on FIV+ cats and find them loving homes. Their immune systems tend to be more sensitive and they usually get more secondary infections compared to an FIV- cat, but a diligent owner can work with that.
