"Wait, what!?" I said to myself on hearing this for the first time about two months ago on RadioK, the U of MN student radio station. How have I not hear this before? Apparently I have to get out more.

The only pop music station worth listening to in Minneapolis other than maybe possibly The Current (89.3), is the college radio station RadioK (https://radiok.org/).
Student music aficionados pick their sets, which at its best means you're swerving down a musical lane from, say, a Brazilian boss nova to some b-side early electronica to shoe gaze to early 70s soul and R&B and then you hear something that immediately speaks to you, a transmission from a different time and place that opens a time capsule of feeling and meaning.
I've only heard a couple of songs by Scott-Heron, but not this one.
