the first thing that comes to mind is a Sabrina the Teenage Witch Salem situation. imagine two scientists (imagining sorta old world blues scientists here) who hate each other and keep trying to one-up each other, until one of them gets super mad so he kills his rival and puts all of their memories into a little house cat.
the protag finds this sentient cat locked up somewhere and immediately gains possibly the most annoying companion in all of history. i imagine he makes fun of the protag almost constantly and tries to sabotage shit occasionally. his entire personality is like this.
