Honestly this is mostly shameless fanservice for myself.
some more ranting about henry deserving better below lol. a bit of hans critical stuff below -
I think what also bothers me the most about Henry's dynamic with Hans is that he's essentially being reduced to sole protector/dog role. And that entire trope both dehumanizes Henry and ignores his trauma as a character.
I think it's bad enough that Henry is forced into that role to the point where he believes that's all he's good for, but for fandom to take his complexity and reduce him to a man who's existence is to rescue Hans, the eternal damsel in distress, is maddening.
Like do people realize that Henry exist as a person with trauma? Do we not connect two-and-two, that his constant need to protect and fight is less about altruism and more about the trauma he experienced? That it's almost his own form of self-harm how little he values himself and sees himself as just a flesh shield.
That's why I truly believe Henry deserves a partner that does protect him. That does call out his brashness and pride and recognizes that it's a wall he's built up since Skalitz. That will defend him on the battlefield and let Henry be the "damsel" for once.
And if not a partner, a community. Because the nobility uses him as a tool. My main hc for him is be becomes a Benedictine Monk that falls in love with another fighter-turned-Monk but that's another story
Deservers someone who tells him it's okay to stop. Who challenges the system that puts him in the position he's in where his life has to be risked, and who protects him.
Like Hans challenges it in words, and in the most meaningless way despite having the power to make a difference. Radzig sends his own son to hell and back (and I accidentally spoiled myself for that, but please no further i'm still made at myself).
Like nobility loves Henry, but only to a point.
It's sad to see the people who care about Henry push him into this self-destructive loop.
And while a lot of it can be excused as "well that's just how things back then where", the game subverts certain stereotypes, briefly touches up on mental health (especially in regards to Henry), and so forth.
Tbh I don't know if i'm mad at the fandom more, for seeing Henry as just an extension of Hans and not his own character, or the game for making Hans so insufferable imo.
And again, I haven't finished the games. So please do not spoil, but I stumbled across the hookup scene, and it left a sour taste in my mouth, especially coupled with how the fandom sees them.
like i will never get over how henry is the most traumatized character in this game and he's been reduced to Hans babysitter.
Again, I'm waiting to be surprised and to be proven wrong, especially about Hans. So please no spoilers. But im hoping their dynamic isn't like this.
And this is like 50% a rant and a reaction of what I see, so chances are it may change
Radzig, but as a snail drawn in Paint.
