Days 5-7: Crossing the Jungle
So my wishes were answered from 90 mile beach, asking for rain… Unfortunately it came a couple days later while I was in the Herekino and Raetea Forests. The rain was incessant. Being wet for 48hr straight is not much fun. All my gear was soaked, waterlogged. I slept in a wet down sleeping bag inside of a wet bivy sac, waking up to put on wet socks and wet shoes, wet shorts and a wet shirt, over which I would put my wet rain gear. The upside of it all: I knew I wasn’t going to (/couldn’t) get any more wet. The slog up and over mini mountains and through mud swamps was extremely defeating at times… In the end though, I knew that if I was able to make it through 90 mile beach, then I could get out of this jungle.
