The racism and sexism, it buuuuuuuuurns
So my mom works for an MD/Phd who gets a ton of free stuff- magazines and books especially. Every once in awhile she brings home stuff she thinks I'd like- I've gotten a few birding magazines that way. Once she brought home this HUGE book- the cover must be 14x17, and it's thick too- of a history of medicine done by a pharmaceutical company. So it's basically propoganda, but it has some really gorgeous illustrations. And I'm a huge softie for books, so I couldn't let it just get callously thrown out.
This is the first time I've opened it in a few years and oh. My. God.
This is some of the most racist shit I've ever seen.
I'm not actually surprised, but it's still just a kick in the fucking teeth.
The text continually refers to anyone not a white male preforming surgery as using primitive techniques, except for Susruta, and the text is written in a tone of "god we are so pissed this brown dude figured out something centuries before we did and was amazing at it". There's no African medicine discussed, even though people in Africa figured out how to cure malaria through plants and preformed c-sections, they act like Peruvian surgeons, who could excise tumors, were silly for believing in their gods when Europe hadn't figured out that rubbing dung on wounds to bring forth the pus was a bad idea, the entire Islamic golden age of medicine is given one page despite preserving all of the Greek and Roman knowledge the text just drooled over, and of course women haven't ever been doctors. I mean it's not like Metrodora wrote a book on gynecology that's full of theories that she observed and tested. Or like Trotula di Ruggerio was well respected enough to write a book with 7 other physicians.
Oh but wait, lady illnesses are gross. Unless they're corrected by a man, obviously. This fucking book has an entire section on J. Marion Sims, the father of gynecology. It spends a paragraph describing his looks and his boyish charm, and weirdly forgets to mention that he was fucking evil. He used the bodies of slave women to fiddle around trying to fix their vaginal fistulas while they had no anesthesia and no choice in the matter. To a rational, empathetic person, reading that he finally closed Anarcha's vaginal fistula after 30 surgeries, during which he discovered that silk sutures were too easily infected and that he couldn't actually close the fistulas, is horrific. But the book acts like him feeding and boarding the three women he repeatedly operated on like he's such a nice guy. What a wonderful man, feeding his human guinea pigs who he treated without dignity and whose pain he didn't try to prevent at all. Because they were tough and could take it, unlike delicate white women.
This book is literally the worst I hate it.
OH MY GOD I JUST FLIPPED THROUGH THE REST OF IT AND THERE IS LITERALLY NOT ONE FEMALE DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST FEATURED IN THE ENTIRE BOOK. I'M GOING TO RAGE VOMIT BLOOD THIS IS SUCH A GROSS BOOK.
the fucking "medicine today and tomorrow" and "pharmaceuticals today and tomorrow" have only white men in the illustration oh my god when was this published??? 1895?
