He sucks. He's often talked about in relation to his son, Brokenstar, which makes him look better in comparison, even though he himself is also a huge jerk. He obviously didn't send babies into battle or starve the elders, but he was still pretty awful...
First of all, there's his relationship with Yellowfang. He's constantly angry at her, ignoring and pushing her away whenever she does anything against his wishes, leaving her upset, guilty or confused. When she became a medicine cat apprentice and they started meeting in secret, he was constantly trying to guilt-trip her into quitting her job for him, getting angrier and angrier whenever she refused. When she finally chose to become a full medicine cat, he basically made it his life's mission to make her feel bad about it. He took every opportunity he could to make her jealous, guilty or regretful. And it only got worse when he became leader. He completely ignored any advice she tried to give him as a medicine cat, being continuously hostile and disrespectful towards her, no matter what she did. But then, when he finally realized he might have messed up, he of course went straight to Yellowfang, expecting her to fix it up for him - even though nothing bad would have happened if he just listened to her in the first place.
Then there's Brokenstar - Raggedstar's and Yellowfang's son. He practically forbid Yellowfang from ever acting as his mother, claiming that he was the only parent Brokenkit needed. He then forcefully gave the kit to Lizardstripe, even though she didn't even want her own kits, let alone somebody else's. It's obvious in the way she treated Brokenkit, refusing him any warmth or kindness, letting other kits bully him, basically only doing the bare minimum necessary to keep him alive. And what does Raggedpelt do to fix it? Absolutely nothing. What a great father he is... I mean, sure, he's noted to be spending time with Brokenkit, showing him battle moves, playing with him and being overall affectionate with his son. But despite that, he never actually does anything to make Brokenkit's situation in the nursery any better :c
Then as Brokenpaw grows up, Raggedstar continues to favor him - he makes him a warrior way too early, and then promises to make him deputy one day. When Foxheart died, Raggedstar did choose Cloudpelt to replace her, but he practically used him as a placeholder for Brokentail, so that his son could have more time to gain some more experience and respect from his clanmates. And then, after Cloudpelt's death, he finally fulfilled his promise. He made Brokentail his deputy, which led to his and to ShadowClan's doom.
There was also Foxheart - Raggedstar's first deputy and a she-cat that was very obviously in love with him. I remember seeing a lot of people painting her as some sort of villain, and while I do admit she was kinda mean and annoying, she was still a tool used by Raggedstar. I'm genuinely convinced that he made her deputy just to make Yellowfang jealous. He was aware of Foxheart's feelings, and despite not reciprocating them, he still used them to his advantage. When the clan gossiped about Foxheart being Raggedstar's secret mate and Brokenkit's mother, he just let them. Foxheart didn't seem to particularly mind the gossip, but still - it must have been confusing. He never confirmed or denied anything, continuously leading her on, leaving her hopeful, despite seemingly not even liking her much as a person. He seemed to respect her as a warrior, at least..?
He had his own sad backstory, sure... He grew up without a father, being bullied and doubted over his unknown heritage, over potentially being half-kittypet... It's all unfortunate, but it doesn't excuse any of his actions. It is something that bothers him long into his adulthood, though. When he finally met his father, Hal, all the anger he felt towards him ultimately led him to killing him - starting a bit of a trend in their family. I do wonder how Hal's father died...
So yeah, I don't like Raggedstar. I'm glad he and Yellowfang didn't get back together in StarClan, it would be miserable.
I made him resemble his father, just to add to the torment. He has his tabby patterns and the size of his ears, along with the scruffy fur texture. From his mom, Featherstorm, he got his eyes, size and overall physique, along with some markings and fur length.
Brokenstar's Leadership Ceremony - REWRITTEN to have it make sense
StarClan has rules the original Clan leaders set up. One of the rules is that every leader must be given 9 lives, in specific exceptions 8.
Now, StarClan, in The Prophecies Begin, are much weaker than they are now. They can't *deny* a newly made leader their lives, even if everyone agrees so.
What if, when Brokenstar got his 9 lives, StarClan was too weak to turn him down and instead gave him the 9 lives, all incredibly mad?
