The order of her transfer had come the same day they had boarded the ship, and an officer had come to pull her aside as she was on her way to the mess hall. She hadn’t been happy about leaving the company she had spent so long with, but there hadn’t been much of a choice left for her to make. All that was left was to pack her bags back up and move to her new sleeping quarters...
A cigarette rested between her lips as she pushed open the door leading to the stern of the ship, her eyes taking a moment to adjust to the dim lighting of the room before she took a few steps inside. It looked almost identical to the part of the ship she had just left, bunk beds placed in tight rows that left little floor space unused.
Most of the bunks were empty save for left equipment, and she guessed most of the men had taken to the more communal areas of the ship. The few men still there all looked like she knew they all did, tired and bruised, and she could already guess that shared experiences wouldn’t be hard to find.
“This free?” Her question was directed to one of the men, her bags already being dumped on what seemed an unoccupied bunk before giving him the chance to respond. “If it isn’t, then it certainly isn’t now.” Taking a drag from her cigarette, she shot him a grin before making herself comfortable on the bunk. “I’m Claire, here to replace your old medic. Heard he wasn’t in too good a shape.”
