Steve/Loki fic rec list
hello welcome to the best ship ..... this is by no means an exhaustive list - a lot of these authors though have written more fic for this ship so if you like a fic, definitely check out their other stuff - and is obviously tuned to my taste which there is no accounting for. but these are some of my faves, in no particular order, featuring a variety of genres and ratings and lengths. fics with the AU note mean they’re in a completely different verse - otherwise they’re at least in the superhero, MCU-adjacent verse. enjoy!
kissBOOMbang | BigSciencyBrain | E | 129000 | AU Steve Rogers is moving into his first house and the last person he expected to show up to haul boxes was Loki. That Loki returns his interest is even more unexpected. In no time, Steve is falling head over heels, but Loki has a dark secret that might tear them apart. --> this one gets to go right at the top because I have read it probably 10 times and every time it warms my heart, grinds it into tiny pieces, and then painstakingly puts it back together by the end. the tag “fluffy domestic hitman thriller” is not a fucking joke fam. I love this fic so much I wanna die. please go read it.
A Little Dream | BigSciencyBrain | M | 22000 | AU Being auctioned off for charity is one of the crazier things Steve Rogers has done. He's mostly sure the mysterious stranger who bid on him isn't a serial killer. Mostly. --> a super fun premise and a SUPER rewarding fic. man this author just GETS this ship. I don’t think CapsLok has one of those keystone 20k long-lowercase-title fics that wrecks you, but other than this being an AU, it gets pretty close tbh. also just read everything this author has written.
Ouroboros/Almost There/New World Blues | f0rcryin0utl0ud | T | 11000 “Wait, wait,” Tony crowed. “Are you telling me Loki’s got a man-crush on Captain America?” he asked gleefully. --> a delightful and funny and cute trilogy which includes my favourite trope for this ship: Loki trying to woo Steve in inconvenient and unnecessarily extra ways.
Maybe You (and your sad blue eyes) | alby_mangroves | E | 29000 Loki had already come to accept being born without a bonded soul to cleave to, one more way in which he would always be the lesser brother. So of course it made sense that it would settle upon him when he least expected it. --> yet another fic I just want to print out and keep in my pocket forever. soulmate trope is seldom my jam but this one is exceptional; it’ll drag you through the wringer, but is well worth it, and features so many Loki feelings. oh and includes GORGEOUS art.
Steady as the Stars/Stumble and Stand | ellasimone | T | 24000 | AU The Social Season of 1890 has just begun, and Loki already despises every minute of it. At the first event that Thor drags him along to, Loki does not get along with one of the other patrons in the slightest. However, he soon finds out that this man, Steve Rogers, has moved in around the corner from the Odinson villa. --> slow-burn regency AU baby!!! after I finished reading this fic I went and forced the author to be my friend (she is super cool) because I loved it so much. the pining ... the atmosphere ... there’s a cute dog ... also this Thor is the best Thor ever.
Midwinter Thaw | rexluscus | G | 12000 On New Year's Eve, Steve and Loki are the only ones home in Avengers HQ when catastrophe strikes. Can they stop arguing and trust each other long enough to work out what to do? --> what’s not to love about two unsuspecting characters being forced to begrudgingly work together to save the day?
Madness | ScotlandEvander | T | 19000 Time makes a deal and when Time makes a deal, it plays out till it is fulfilled. Steve Rogers is learning this the hard way and he’s quite sure it’ll end in madness. --> I’m always a slut for time loop fics!! especially since time travel is kind of the name of the Marvel game right now, this one is quite fun and an excellent slow build relationship. also watching Steve lose his mind with every loop is hilarious.
Remember This Cold | Lise | varied | 800000 (74 fics and counting) The series where Loki and Steve Rogers start orbiting each other, and it gradually turns into a thing, and then into another kind of thing. Or, the author's long and complicated method of making Steve/Loki make sense as a pairing, and then exploring how it would work. Spoiler alert: a lot of the time, it doesn't. --> I had no idea where in this list this one was supposed to go but I assume that if you like CapsLok, you’ve heard of this series. it’s canon AU basically from Avengers up to MCU real time. it’s extremely long, and will drag you through a LOT of hurt to get to the comfort, but if you wanna put in the time to read it it will not disappoint you. I love the Steve and Loki of this verse so much and it’s exciting to know that after 7 years of fic, there’s still more to come.
So ... you got impersonated | aphrodaisyacs | G | 4500 Steve was torn between praying for the ground to swallow him, and interrupting them to ask Peter just where he first saw those videos. Because as much as they felt like the cheesy propaganda movies he was forced to be a part of back in the war, the man on the screen, who looked and even sounded exactly like him… “That’s not me. I don’t remember recording any of these.” --> this is that good good Loki-loves-to-impersonate-Captain-America-and-gets-up-to-some-serious-mischief CANONICAL trope. this fic is very cute and fun - I love when Steve gets to be snarky and have a mischievous side as well - and has an equally fun sequel of them punking everyone.
Transient Here Below | MonstrousRegiment | G | 4600 In a small little café lost in an anonymous corner in Paris, Loki sits to a little table, tea-cup at his side and old leather-bound novel spread open in his long-fingered, musician’s hands. He looks oddly, queerly mundane; dark jeans, grey t-shirt, simple but well-cut black leather jacket. Steve stands, and stares, uncertain. --> I simply LOVE the prose and the dialogue and just the energy of this fic? I want the author to write 50000 words of just them talking.
Are You Familiar with Chaos Theory | HumbleFarmer | T | 20000 After Steve returned the space stone to 1970, he planned to travel back to the 1940s and live the years taken from him. Instead, he finds himself confronting Loki, entangling with the fae (who exist, too, apparently), and going on a road trip through space and time with the trickster god. Oh, he's definitely screwed up this timeline. Or actually, maybe not. --> who DOESN’T wanna see end-of-Endgame time-traveling Steve run into Loki somewhere in the many loose timelines of the MCU multiverse? I love them being reluctant teammates in times of crisis, and a pre-Thor Loki with slightly less sharp edges is fun to play with.
The Many Doors of Níu Heimar | nixajane | M | 78000 In the weeks before Thor's coronation, Loki almost dies, not once, but twice. --> this is legit the first CapsLok fic I ever read, years ago before I was even into the ship. very plotty and action-packed, which I love - an AU of the events of Thor that result in Loki sort of accidentally becoming an Avenger and thirsting after Steve from moment one.
One Thing After Another (After Another) | Syrum | T | 7600 Steve and Loki's relationship is one of the best kept secrets in S.H.I.E.L.D's history, or so Steve thinks. Loki knows better. --> another very fun, feel-good fic, featuring all the Avengers and another trope that fits this ship very well - all of Steve’s friends threatening to kill Loki if he breaks Steve’s heart. much like in TDW Loki tells them to get in line.
Found a Reason for Me | elyssblair | T | 7400 | AU Steve's part of the security detail assigned to protect the visiting Asgardian Royal Family. Including tabloid darling Prince Loki. --> trying to balance out some of the Big Angst fics on this list with some fun AUs, such as this one where Steve is apparently uniquely talented at taming the chaos that is Loki. and then they fall in love or something.
The Blade for the Honey | MonstrousRegiment | E | 8600 What Steve wants is to sit down and actually talk to Loki, about a hundred million things he knows Loki knows but won’t share. Loki sees through the ages and through space and time like they are glass walls, thin membranes he can push against and walk through rather than impenetrable walls. He sees his lives, all the many different existences of a creature named Loki, unfold one after the other like a film, birth to death and death to birth, rebirth, crucifixion. --> this fic is built on a really interesting premise, has some excellent Steve pov narration, and is just an extremely satisfying journey start to finish. also I didn’t expect Steve-having-sex-with-Jotun-Loki to be my jam but here we are.
We said our dreams would carry us | teh-helenables | T | 6800 | AU Loki tells himself he wants his own apartment and a high-paying position at Shaw's law firm. What he really wants is much different. --> the softest and sweetest of mundane domestic AUs. Loki co-habitating with Thor and Jane is so unexpectedly sweet, and I love the Professor X cameo. if you’re having a bad day, I dare you to read this fic and just TRY not to cheer up.
Per Aspera Ad Astra | FelicityGS | G | 20000 (5 parts) It starts with his birthday. --> another author with BEAUTIFUL writing, and what’s more this story is really fun - Steve getting to know Loki, Loki learning to trust someone, various mythological gods making guest appearances, it’s got it all, really.
Let’s Talk Shop | MostFacinorous | E | 24000 | AU Steve in HR is asked to investigate high performing troublemaker Loki. And he does. Thoroughly. --> gonna be real with you chief! this one’s just sex. there’s other fics with (very good) sex on this list but they all have lots of plot too. if you just came here for sexy things this one will provide.
All the stars were crashing ‘round | dfotw | T | 11000 | AU Going back to his house one evening, Steve finds a wounded crane and - being who he is - tries to help it, even as the wounded bird turns into a wounded man who won't answer his questions, eat his food, or leave his thoughts. --> to round out the variety of genres on this list, here’s a really love fairytale AU - I loved the atmosphere of this fic, it really catches you up in it.
under bright stars burning | 100indecisions | T | 21000 When Steve is a kid, he meets a boy named Loki who says he's a prince and shows him real magic. It's kind of weird (but that doesn't mean he doesn't like it). --> Loki and Steve as kids becoming friends is not something I knew I wanted but apparently I do want it and here it is. I love the stages of their relationship-building, and the ending is lovely and hopeful.
