Kylo wasted no time tackling the nearest rebels. He barely moved his hand, the gesture like flicking crumbs off a table. Three of them were dragged across the rocky ground yelling.
You picked off fighters coming up behind him with your blaster, before ducking and rolling to the ramp of the ship for cover, laying fire across to the right to allow some of your troops to get onboard.
The ranks of insurgents increased, but he kept on striding out to where their firepower was the heaviest. His lightsaber a blur as he wielded blasts away, his free hand holding people mid air, force choking them and letting them fall. It was a sight to behold. Your own force crackled under your skin, could you use it like a weapon? Flashbacks from your childhood immediately haunted you… you were young, unknowing then …should you wait for training like Kylo said?
Out of hiding a rebel appeared and sprinted towards your master, dodging the wake of bodies he’d left behind. Instinctively you dashed from your cover and ran to cut her off, hand outstretched your own force bowling her over.
Time slowed, it happened without you knowing. You had her clutched in your phantom grasp. Your power rippled. Her face pure terror as she tried to scrabble away from you, but unable. Pinned like a mouse under a Loth-cat's paw. You'd forgotten yourself. You hadn't let the shadow take hold since you had to leave your home planet, that was self defence, you could rationalise it then and ever since. But Kylo was squad- something more, different? But yet you never left a trooper behind. This was the same justification.
Shots crackled over your head as you slowly realised your squad was covering you so you could get back, your sergeant signalling to retreat. Kylo called out the same command as he ran back to the ship, his eyes wide at the scene before him, the rebel at your mercy.
Hearing his call snapped you out of your trance and you let your force drop momentarily. It was enough for the rebel fighter to get a shot off, catching the side of your helmet.
Fraks sake. You hit the ground stunned. A piercing ring filled your ears, you wrenched the ruined helmet off yelling in pain as you did so. Your hand went to the side of your head and came away smothered in blood. Your vision came in and out of focus, but you made out Kylo and your sergeant coming for you. A blaze of retaliation peeled from the ship as your Master hoisted you up in his arms. Then everything went blank.
*
Visions came and went. Your sergeant pressing a bacta-pak against the side of your head. Her eyes full of questions. Kylo Ren raging at your troops. Your sergeant standing close, harsh whispered conversations. Kylo searching your face, his guard down, concern tugging at his features. And then that void again.
*
You woke up in unfamiliar surroundings.. the mechanical hum of a med droid helped place where you could be. Med bay. But not the one you knew? Then it all came rushing back. You bolted upright and then you saw him.
Kylo. All eyes on you. He instantly got to his feet, his long stride ate up the distance.
“Never fail me like that again.” He hissed.
Confusion swirled in your already foggy mind. His face was hard. Disappointment swam in your gut. Failure was weakness. It had cost you so much in your past.
You opened your mouth to speak, to what? Apologise? Explain yourself? He saw what happened out there. It could have cost both your lives, and your squad. Your shoulders sagged under the weight of your feelings.
He leaned closer, that creak of the leather clenching as his fist tightened made you hitch your breathing. His brows knitted as he searched your face. He wanted an answer. You couldn't give it.
Tiredness consumed you. A snippet of what you heard your sergeant say on the shuttle came back to you. The fear in her eyes as she took you in anew and spoke to Kylo…
“She’s like you, isn’t she?”
The reality of her words hung heavy. You blinked back threatening tears. Here you were again not belonging in one world or another. You knew your time as a Captain was over. The one place that had been home the longest.
“I’m relocating your quarters to the same floor as mine.” Kylo cut through your miserable thoughts.
“You need more training than I anticipated, Apprentice.” He leaned in and hissed the last two words.
“I– I…” You croaked. You had nothing to say for yourself.
But events on the surface flooded back. Why was he being like this? It felt like a connection there, a whirlwind, but now it seemed like madness. Look at what it had cost you, nearly losing your head, and now your squad, your sergeant and friend.
Tentatively you reached out with your force but felt nothing but a wall around him. For a flicker, his face softened.
“I.. thought I could have lost you,” you began softly, but he stopped you from saying anymore. His gloved hand caressed the side of your face, tipping you upwards under your chin. His eyes shone. The rage instantly evaporated. He bent towards you, his lips on your ear as he spoke. A tremor there.
“So did I.”
And then he dropped the wall around him. You could feel all his fear, pain, anger. So much like yours.
Tears pooled in your eyes, as he took you in. His face so much like that on the ship. He tenderly placed a kiss on your cheek where a tear escaped. Your eyes locked, your mouth parted as he ran his tongue over those beautiful lips of his, tasting you. His pupils dark and inviting. Your heart hammered in your ears, want gnawed in the depths of your gut. You reached out but his face changed. A split second, a look of fear there under all the rage. The invisible mask slammed back on. He turned and strode out.
