So, here's the thing. In *almost* every conceivable way, this chapter builds upon what the first chapter gave us and improves. It continues steadily progressing the story and expanding the world and people around us. The sidequests are elite in that we're getting the tragedies of nameless, faceless people who matter and had ideals and loved people in their own lives, and we get returning characters from the previous case as they try to cope with how the murder case has affected their lives. The murder case was incredibly compelling and grounded in the severe pressure that the political state of Kanai Ward is imposing upon its children, and had fantastic character work for such a short time we get with them. The murderous trio are delightfully tragic, and while I hate that they all had to die, I can at least take comfort in the fact that they didn't have to live their lives separated in the name of revenge. Yuma's character is developing quite nicely; his struggle with his self-image and morality as an aspiring detective is a really intriguing angle, especially with him rejecting the mystery Labyrinth for the time being, and it makes me curious just how much things will be amped up next chapter for him to resolve to access it again. Getting more insight into Martina is really valuable before she's either cubed or escapes(I'm hoping for the latter). Kurumi is a sweetheart, and I'm really interested to learn more about how she and her grandfather tie into the story later on.

The problem with *almost* is Desuhiko is this chapter's featured ally, and boy oh boy does he suck, disproportionately bringing down the overall quality of the chapter for me. In Kodaka's evil little cauldron of doom and despair, he mixed up the worst traits of Kazuichi Soda and Teruteru Hanamura with dashes of Leon Kuwata's aspirations for flavor, dyed the results blond, and called it a day. He didn't hit for me, and writing in your own scenario that requires this pervert to crossdress to infiltrate an all-girls' building "for the investigation" (he barely helps) and then have him forcefem Yuma against his will while promising to "be gentle" is. It's. It's. It's disproportionately uncomfortable and transmisogynistic and is an active drag on the story for me. Does Kodaka know he's allowed to write a ladies' man without making him a creeper? Does he remember that he's allowed to do that?

On the overall, I still really enjoyed the chapter..... just not when this FUCKER was flapping his gums. Thank god each detective is getting one chapter because that means his is over

due to the Aetheria Trio forever living rent free in my head I have a headcanon about them that I want to share

Yoshiko, Kurane, Waruna, Aiko and Kurumi are all 2nd year students at Aetheria and Karen was a 3rd year

also I feel like Karen being older is part of the reason she killed Aiko. She believed that even after she graduated and became an actress it would only be a year before Aiko graduated and stole the spotlight from her again (smh, fuck you Karen, ruining the lesbians)
