58 Rain Falling
„Could you hold me a little longer?“, Clara asked as the rain dripped down from the trees above us in her cold and pale face. I grabbed her hand tighter and swallowed a few times before I could finally answer.
“Of course, Clara, I will stay with you.”
Her head laid heavily in my lap, her black stuck to her skin from the water.
“You know, Diane, I never told you, because the moment never felt right - “, she whispered, her voice getting weaker with every word.
“Don’t speak, save your strength”, I interrupted her. Whatever she had left to say, did I really want to hear it? That woman who had stolen my heart?
“No, I have to. Before it is too late… Diane… I love you. I always have”, she pressed through her tears and her face was torn by the pain.
I could have sworn that it had stopped raining as all noise suddenly disappeared. My mouth was opened wide in shock and all I could do was to stare at her dark brown eyes.
“You… love me”, I plainly repeated and she nodded slowly, smiling one last time.
Her grip lost all strength. Her eyes lost all life. She was gone.
“I love you too, Clara! Do you hear me? I love you too!”, I yelled but she wouldn’t answer. She wouldn’t breathe any more either.
“Clara? Clara! Hey, stay with me, okay? Stay with me! Answer me, Clara! CLARA!”
Couldn’t she have lived a little longer? Just a little? Long enough so she knew she was loved as well?
My heart.
I couldn’t take the pain.
As if all strings binding me to her had been ripped apart. Oh, how the tables had turned.
We had only met half a year ago. She had walked into a tavern and pointed her finger at me.
“You! You will protect me!”, she had decided, a little nervous though, wearing a stunningly noble dress. She had been out of place, far too fancy to walk into a tavern just like that.
“And who do you think you are that you could order me to?”, I had laughed. Although I had been intrigued by her presence and demeanour from the very first second. Her answer had been a lie, of course.
I had been quite aware of who she was. Only a few weeks in after I had started to accompany her, Clara had proven with her knowledge and way to talk that she had to be royal. And Clara might have also slipped up and told me accidentally.
In contrast to her, I was rather rough and cold-hearted.
I guess that is why I had always put such a distance between us.
Clara had had a mission.
“As the daughter – uh – a citizen of this kingdom, it is my duty to protect it. That’s why I have to find the treasure of peace and bring it back, as it has been stolen years ago. It’s the only way to ensure our survival.” Her strict eyes wouldn’t let me doubt her for a second.
I didn’t show her once, but from this very moment on, I had been hers. Her wish became my command. I couldn’t do anything about it, Clara was my master.
There were just three problems.
As the crown princess, Clara attracted dangers all over. We were basically constantly attacked and I quickly understood why she had chosen someone to protect her. Secondly, she obviously had no permission to go on this quest, so we were also hunted by the castle’s soldiers who had been ordered to bring her back home. And finally, Clara was the clumsiest person I had ever met.
“Diane? Why did you agree to follow me?”, she had asked one day in all seriousness. I felt myself blushing and brushed it off with a laugh.
“My goal is to keep you alive for no other reason than because it seems pretty dang difficult.” Her response was to throw a rock at me.
I didn’t lie entirely. My goal had been to keep her alive, always. Nothing else. And I had managed to do so for six months.
Which didn’t matter any more.
My princess was dead. I had failed. The rain was still falling.

Super cheesy lover thought....
Oh I have a sweet tooth, but the caramel of your voice and sugar of your words somehow satisfy even the strongest of my desires. I could survive for a life time on that alone. @gaberoid
