what is your favorite media content??
content in terms of type of media? or content in terms of narrative or character archetype?
i like documentaries. interactive documentaries are FUCKING COOL.
in terms of fiction, i like either realism or surrealism or meta-fiction that deals with serious issues but in an off-beat way. i like dramedy and black humor and nihilism - anything that’s post-modernist in terms of storytelling and design. i like well-written and morally complex pulp or genre fiction. i don’t like melodrama or soap operas or anything that feels emotionally manipulative, overly simplistic in its world view, or like it assumes its audience is stupid. i also really love worldbuilding, and when setting or machines are basically main characters in their own rights (like the tardis in doctor who, or manchester in life on mars, or antarctica in worst journey in the world, or the impala on spn).
for character types, i always fall in love with characters who are outsiders from society; who have trouble forming (normal) social bonds; who are more philosophical than emotional, and in fact really suck at having and understanding their own emotions, yet at the same time have a compassionate streak that probably gets them into trouble; who believe in moral relativity, if they’re not outright sociopaths, or at least have a deep understanding that most morality is hypocritical; and if you throw in alcohol or drug addiction problems, i’m in love.
see: both sherlock holmes and john watson; jack sparrow; tony stark; endverse!cas; allison hendrix and helena from orphan black; and debatably viktor from yuri on ice.
i also love the internet and mobile technology and virtual reality and what all of that is doing to culture and communication and identity and society.
