For @profound-boning because I keep bullying her into writing fics for me. So have some dadstiel + dean in glasses.

Fun fact: babies love glasses.

Dean and Cas weren’t aware of this bit of trivia until Claire came into their lives. Dean picked her up for the first time and nearly combusted with the sweet smile the blue-eyed girl gave him before her fat little fists came up to wrap around his frames and pull them from his face.

And it became their Thing. Any time Dean was holding Claire, he lost his glasses to the little girl. She liked to wave them around or chew on them and occasionally throw them at the cat. 

Cas warned Dean he shouldn’t let her get in that habit. And sure enough Claire was soon ripping glasses off the face of anyone who was in arm’s reach of her. 

The first time Claire breaks Dean’s glasses, Cas gives what Dean assumes is an “I told you so” look. But he’s not sure. He can’t see. 

He goes through a few more pairs in the course of their first year with Claire before it’s decided that it would be easier to switch to contacts. 

Fast forward a few years, Claire is in first grade. She grew out of her glasses-wrangling phase a while back but Dean’s grown so accustomed to contacts he doesn’t switch back. Plus, he no longer looks like a total loser at work wearing goggles over his glasses.

But one day Claire gets sent home with a note from her teacher. She’s having difficulty seeing the board even from the front row.

Dean and Cas make an appointment with the eye doctor for the next week. They reassure a nervous Claire that everything will be fine but their little girl will leave that doctor’s office in tears.

“I don’t wanna wear glasses!” she cries when they get home. “I’ll look ugly!”

“Oh, honey, no,” Cas says and strokes her hair. “You’re beautiful and glasses won’t change that.”

“Garth wears glasses and all the other kids make fun of him! What if they tease me too?” She starts to cry harder.

“Isn’t that the funny kid with the sock puppet?” Dean wonders and promptly shuts up when Cas shoots him a look. “Hey, look, kiddo. No one is gonna make fun of you for just wearing glasses. There’s nothing wrong with them. They’re just a tool to help you see. And if someone does say something, sock ‘em in the-”

“Dean,” Cas warns. 

“Eh, tell the teacher,” Dean amends.

Claire looks outraged and heartbroken at the mere suggestion. “I can’t be a tattletale!” She turns her fearful eyes on Cas before burying her face in his chest. “Papa, please don’t make me wear them!” 

“Claire, listen,” Cas tries again. “There’s nothing wrong with wearing glasses. Thousands of people wear them every day and no one makes fun of them or calls them ugly. Like Daddy, for instance. He used to wear glasses.”

Claire sniffles and turns a bit so she can look at Dean. “You did?”

Dean feels a bit like there’s a spotlight shining in his face but he musters a bright smile. “Yeah! I wore them for years. Looked pretty handsome in ‘em too, if I say so myself.”

“What happened to them?”

“Well when someone was really tiny, she liked to pull them off my face and break them.” Dean exaggerates the motions with his hands.

And, finally, Claire smiles and allows a small giggle. 

“You wanna see them, munchkin?” 

She nods and Dean hops up. He runs to his and Cas’s bathroom and quickly removes his contacts. 

Claire gasps when Dean reenters her room in a flourish, flailing his arms with a loud “ta-da!”

“What do you think?” he asks, sliding the glasses down his nose and popping a hip in a striking pose. “Do they bring out my eyes?”

He sits on the bed next to them so Claire can get a better look and she’s staring at him like he’s a different person.

“See? Daddy wears glasses,” Cas says. “Do you think he looks ugly?”

“No!” Claire shouts, shaking her head wildly. “You look good, Daddy! Honest!”

“Well, thank you, darling,” Dean says with a smile. “But I guarantee that you will look twice —no, three — no, a hundred times better. The other kids will be begging to get glasses when they see you in yours.”

“Really?”

“Of course! You’re gonna bust through that door with your cool new glasses and blow them all away! And you know what?” He reaches across the bed to cover Claire’s hand with his own. “Papa and I will be there with you every step of the way.”

Claire’s fingers wriggle to thread through Dean’s. “You will?”

He smiles softly. “Absolutely.” 

And a week later when Claire’s glasses arrive, she walks confidently down the halls of her school, each hand held safely in her fathers’. 

They pause just outside her classroom and Cas grins as he watches Dean and Claire adjust their identical frames.

“Are you ready?” he asks.

She takes a deep breath before nodding once, firmly.

He stoops to wrap her in a hug, pressing a kiss to the side of her head and Dean does the same with an added fist bump. “Knock ‘em dead, sweetheart.”

Claire makes to dash through the door but she only makes it a few steps. Dean is about to ask what’s wrong when she turns abruptly to kiss his cheek. “Thanks, Daddy.”

Dean blinks after her as she darts into the classroom, almost dumbstruck as his heart swells. He stands shakily and tries to wipe at his face without it looking like-

“Dean, are you crying?” Cas asks, stepping toward him.

“What? No!” Dean scoffs. “I just- m-my eyes. They’re still adjusting to the- to the glasses.”

“Mmm-hmm. Right.” Cas’s hand glides gently across his back as he steers them down the hall. “You did a good thing.”

Dean snorts and throws his arm around Cas’s waist as they walk. “You just missed the glasses.”

“Yeah, I did,” Cas admits sheepishly. “They remind me of our college days.” He has a wistful smile that holds the impression of fond memories before it quirks up into something a little particular. Like a certain memory that involves the campus library and a rickety old desk.

Dean grins slyly. “Why, Castiel Winchester, you naughty thing. We are in an elementary school for crying out loud.”

Cas shoves against Dean’s shoulder. “I’m divorcing you,” he says and speeds up.

“Hey I never said I was necessarily against it,” Dean calls after his husband. “Cas. Sweetheart? Wait! Cas! You know this prescription isn’t updated; I don’t actually know where I’m going!”
