THE DRIVE

Chapter I

What the fuck am I doing? Raine thought, on the eighth hour of this godforsaken drive. He was tired, hungry, scared beyond belief. Daniel was too but he could actually sleep as he sat in the backseat. Dan had insisted on driving multiple times but Raine needed someone to be able to stop Anthony if he woke up.

The storm had started only 30 minutes ago but it was already making driving difficult. He could barely see, and he definitely couldn’t hear anything over the harsh rain and loud thunder. This was insane.

The nearest Vampire Help and Living Facility or VHLF was in Michigan. A 10 hour drive from his home in Omaha. Sure there were others around closer to them but the one in Michigan was the closet known facility and frankly the safest.

Daniel suddenly spoke up, “Isn’t this the town?” He asked.

“What? No it can’t be,” Raine quickly responded before looking at the dash and seeing that it 5:00 not 4:00. Had it really been nine hours? He looked back up at the and saw the sign. “Urbandale” it read, such a stupid name. “Shit.”

“Take a left up here. It should be close,” Dan instructed.

“He’s still asleep, right?” Raine asked.

“Yep, he’s still good but he is movin’ a bit,” He responded.

“Kay,” Raine turned and Daniel was correct it was right there. He quickly parked in the parking lot before getting out and moving around to the passenger side of the truck. He slowly opened the car door before Dan showed next to him so he could help pull Anthony out of the car.

They successfully got him out and Daniel carried him as they walked in. They must have walked in the wrong door since there was no reception desk to be seen or a receptionist. “Hello!? We need help with a newly-turned!” Raine yelled. It was probably bad to be yelling in a building full of vampires but better that then getting bitten by the vampire Dan was carrying.

A woman swiftly appeared to assist. “Hi, welcome to the VHLF. How can I help you guys?”

“Hi, My brother was turned a little over 10 hours ago. Can you please help him?” Raine stumbled over his words.

“Yes, of course follow me,” The woman instructed. The two werewolves quickly followed. The woman led them to an examination room. “Can you put him on the bed please,” Daniel listened and gently placed him on the bed. “Now, I’m going to have to ask you both to stand outside for your safety,” Raine almost refused but quickly rethought at the look Dan gave him.

The two stood outside as the woman, who Raine was eager to find out the name of so we could all stop referring to her as the woman, check out Anthony and feed him and after he was actually conscious talked to him. Raine wasn’t awake for the talking part. He actually wasn’t awake for a lot of the process. Since he hadn’t slept in about 25 hours.

When he woke up he was laying on a couch. He almost panicked but quickly remembered that they got to the VHLF. He was slightly confused since he knew he had dreamed but he couldn’t remember for the life of him what it was about

Daniel walked in soon after he woke up. “Hey, you up?”

“Yeah, how long was I asleep for?” Raine asked in response.

“Well it's three in the afternoon so I would say about...10 hours?” Daniel said.

“Jesus, well I'm definitely well rested now. How's Anthony? Can we go see him yet?”

“He just went out with somebody to get his ID fixed. It's still super overcast so he wanted to get it over with.”

“Okay, I didn't miss anything important did I?”

“Nope, other than a tour of the place nothing really happened.”

“Okay, that's good,” Raine got up off the couch. “Since you got a tour and I didn't why don't you show me around?” Dan nodded in agreement and showed him around the place. It was big, about the size of a big hospital. Raine was 80% this had been a hospital at some point.

They even had a gym here as well as a whole extra wing it the back for living quarters that he hadn't even seen when he first walked in. The two spent about 30 minutes walking and talking and looking around before the woman, who Raine could finally read the name tag that said “Alice”, appeared.

“Hey, you're Raine right?” Alice said pointing to him.

“That's right, can I go see Anthony?” He quickly asked.

“Yes, I actually need to talk to you both,” she said. They ended up leaving right after that to go get Anthony. All three then moved to an office. “Now, since you two are close and one of you is a vampire, the relationship is going to change. You won’t be able to talk as much and we need to make sure the bond isn’t strained. Now for some people this isn’t a problem but for others it can become a major issue. I know you two are brothers and that this likely won’t be an issue for you but we have to make sure with everyone in this situation,” She recited the speech that she had probably done a thousand times.

“I’m fairly certain that won’t be an issue for us. I mean- there was a time where we didn’t talk for like two months and then went right back to it without a problem,” Anthony responded.

“Mhm, I'm sure we’ll be fine,”Raine said.

“That’s good i just have to make sure with everybody, standard procedure. Well! Now that that’s done and over with you two are good to go. Anthony will have to stay here for awhile until we are sure you have a suitable living arrangement,” Alice explained.

“I actually meant to talk to you about that. My pack doesn’t really have somewhere good to stay right now. We just got kicked out of our apartments and we don’t have anywhere to stay...Is there any possibility we could stay here for awhile, just until we can get something set up. There’s only 7 of us. If you can’t that’s fine I just had to ask,” Raine rambled on anxiously

“Yeah, that’s fine we have plenty of space for a reason.”

“Thank you, thank god...”

Raine Jackson, Alize Arnaud and Amandine Sanchez hit the coast of Morocco for a week of surf, sun, and....

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 May, 2011:

''I truly had no idea what lifestyle or culture awaited me in Morocco. I had never been to an Arabic country before but since I’ve always been interested in all types of religions. I was eager to jump straight in and get amongst it! I’d been told that rugged coast catered for plenty of empty waves, and I couldn’t wait to explore it – just the 3 of us.

Some of my fondest memories of the trip are just driving along the coast with Alize Arnaud and Amandine Sanchez, blasting music on the stereo, doing burn outs in the hire cars and just laughing so, so much! I also loved the day we surfed tandem on the stand-up paddleboard!

The long wave of Imsouane that our house overlooked was beautiful peeling right hander which was perfect for long boarding and also great on a stand-up board. I just remember how much fun it all was, screaming and laughing together so much!

There were so many different places you could surf and a variety waves – reef and beach breaks, slabs and soft mellow points – all dependent on different swell and wind directions. It was like a surfer’s playground: everything you could ever need was there.

We spend a lot of time driving to explore different locations. It was well worth it – we got to see a lot of beautiful coastline, different towns, their inhabitants and their way of living. I loved the sense of adventure – you never knew what was lying around the next headland.   Morocco is such a beautiful place and I think all surfers should stick it at the top of their “must-go-to” list of places! There’s such a variety of waves along the coast, I would definitely go back!''
