How truly selfish it is, to speak out of turn. Responsive, we are. A response. Not a conversation, just two mouths reacting in order to fill the vacant space between them. The awkwardness of silence. Brutal. So even if there is nothing to say we still speak or make noise. I can’t tell the difference anymore; so we speak. Uncertain of our substance. Unconcerned with our depth. Unaware of their lingering presence and our participation. Sometimes we speak not to be heard but to be known. Sometimes we listen only to advance our response. How selfish can we be? To respond in combat. Sometimes we just want to be heard, nothing else. Sometimes silence is the appropriate response.
