On the night of 12 May 1956, after attending a party hosted by Elizabeth Taylor, 34-year-old Montgomery Clift crashed into a telephone pole not far from the house. Taylor ran from the house to find her friend and co-star bleeding and struggling to breath. While the news reported Taylor as "hysterical," she removed a tooth from Clift's mouth, which stopped him from choking to death.
Clift broke his nose, cut his lip, and fractured his jaw in three places, which had to be wired back together by surgery. The accident happened less than a month into filming Raintree County and the studio considered cancelling production. Clift insisted on continuing, rightly predicting that the film would be a hit because the audience would want to see the "before" and "after" versions of his face (while the extensive plastic surgery left no obvious scars, the left side of Clift's face was partially paralyzed, and his face was swollen from medication, drugs Clift would start to abuse to combat the pain from his accident).

The movie had been filmed in nearby Danville, Kentucky and the two actresses starred in the film along with Montgomery Clift. The movie had a wide release two months later in December.
