Hey uhh chasm your dogs are looking kinda weird
(Chasm doesn't seem to be the only one suffering from a certain scary blueberry disease )
Translation: Post a ranking list about which of the Rainworld creatures have the weirdest most fucked up biologies in your eye.
From most to least messed up biologies. Like personally I think spearmaster is way way way more fucked up then every other slugcat
Ohohohoh! Now you're speaking my language!
Okay so, I'm gonna do slugcats and some other creatures.
Least fucked up is Lynx slugcats and Lizards. Lynxes are basically just furries tbh, aside from their impressive endurance and jaw strength. Lizards of all varieties are literally just animals to me. They have fur and teats though, my lizards are closer to mammals than reptiles lmaoooo. Their head carapaces do incorporate iron in their structures though, and lizards regularly chew on and scrape metal off of various ruins for this purpose.
Mouse slugcats are slightly more weird cuz their tails are longer, slimmer and prehensile for climbing and holding onto stuff. Otherwise they're the same as other slugcats.
Vultures are kinda messed up but that's because they're not super divergent from the purposed organisms that the benefactors made, like, they're only different in terms of behavior and some cosmetic features being lost for practical ones.
Otter slugcats are more weird but they're only really weird cuz of their barbels and their eyeballs. They have those eyes cuz otters rely on sight the most out of any slugcat and live in a region with lots of murky water (taking this from another post which I really like but Forgot who made it!!!!). The barbels help them detect electric signals in water, kinda like a shark but nowhere near as strong. The "external gills" are actually closer to whiskers and barbels than any form of gas exchange surface; otters just have more efficient respiratory systems that are better adapted for semi-aquatic life than regular slugcats.
Leviathans are supremely messed up internally but that's because they age extremely slowly and have a special, cyclical metabolism that slows down to the point they'll be dormant for weeks or months before becoming active for a week or two to hunt for food. As such, alot of the leviathans found are actually only fourth or fifth generation descendants of the leviathans made by benefactors.
Centipedes are also pretty messed up because they're descended from living batteries that were cultivated by the benefactors for any expeditions or adventures into the world below the clouds. Modern centipedes have stronger limbs, completely redeveloped their jaws, and are much bigger than their ancestors. The secondary "head" at the ends of their bodies is actually a set of body segments adapted for the dual purpose of detecting/grasping prey and serving as a false head to distract predators.
Artificer (or rather his parents) were made as living weapons but their biology is remarkably streamlined and effective; it almost appears as if these adaptations were entirely natural.
Spearmaster on the other paw is, broadly speaking, a hot mess. Suns was not kind to her during her creation, and though they've come to regret what they did to her, the results of that previous coldness are still very present.
Her needles are made from a secreted, calcium filled mucus that's designed to harden on contact with pure elemental hydrogen. Her mouth, esophagus, and stomach are also completely absent, while her intestines have been massive reworked for processing a purely liquid diet and scrubbing her food from any nasties like germs or parasites.
Spearmaster probably isn't the most messed up thing around though. If I ever detail what the Calamity is like, it'll probably be way more messed up.
Anyways here's some biological explanations for some stuff
What lurks in the depths below…
I was thinking back on dumb things I did on my first rainworld playthrough and remembered that I somehow RODE A LEVIATHAN to moon. When I first saw it I was like “oh, what’s that?” So I decided to go to the shoreline section of the rw wiki. It said that although risky, jetfish can be rode across the water. I thought the wiki was talking about leviathans, so while it was facing away from me I hopped on its back all the way to moon. It never attacked me. I still have no idea how I did this 😭 idk I guess monk is just built different
Sir...are you ok?
Leviathan
didnt have enough time to finish it
previous day - next day
I'm never going to finish this sooo I'm just gonna post it here :)
I was actually really proud of the background. Also feel free to use the background :D
