#raise expectations

i wonder if we could reformat the #NOT ALL [WHATEVERS] trope and turn it into a way to raise expectations, like:

“well if some guys manage to be feminist, so should more guys” or “if some white ppl manage to be anti-racist, so should more white ppl” or “if some cishets manage to be queer allies, so should more cishets” or “if some christians manage to be actually compassionate, so should more christians” etc.

When we declare that men will always be brutes and women can only shrug from on high, we engage in what President George W. Bush once called the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Or, as Tracy Jordan would say, “That's the subtle racism of lowered expectations. Bing Crosby said that.”

But in all seriousness, this article by Irin Carmen on raising our expectations for men is great, and includes a brilliant quote by the Notorious RBG: “the pedestal upon which women have been placed has all too often, upon closer inspection, been revealed as a cage.”
