having ducks is great but…

My mum convinced me to transplant a duck nest from an absolute unit of a nettle patch, to a house in the pouring rain. I got bit 5 times and stung about 15, but the duck, ducklings, and eggs are safely in the house now and hopefully they’ll do alright. The duck was stupidly smart with her nest placement is the most annoying thing about it because a nettle patch under a hawthorn tree that’s being choked by brambles is a very safe place for a nest… but it’s right next to a suspected rat nest. So I had to kneel on nettles and work around branches and stupidly thick bramble stems to grab some ducklings while trying not to get hit in the face by the mother who was justifiably not happy with me. She picked an amazing spot and she’s the best mother I’ve seen from our ducks but babies would have gotten got by the rats if we didn’t move her. Weirdly she had two chicken eggs in her nest that appeared recently and we don’t have a cockerel.

A continuation of my rants about the joys of ducks…

Update about my ducks for anyone who remembers the last post I made on them and cares.

Last year’s ducklings are all good, we’re finding homes for them because they’re all drakes and we don’t have enough space to get more girls.

This year’s brooding duck has made her nest outside of the pen and because of this she has was found by my mother before she could get a good clutch going. You’d think this was good, no need to recuse ducklings from brambles, you’d be wrong. Every night I have to herd this wobbly duck out of her nest, in a nettle patch, and back into the pen so she can be put in the house and not be eaten by a fox. I also have to reach into the nettle patch and grab any eggs in the nest to keep rats from getting them.

My legs and forearms are covered in stings and I have to go back out there tomorrow night and do it again.

My ducks just laid so many eggs like an absurd amount of eggs literally what am I supposed to do with these I do not like duck eggs
