I love the concept for Parallel Sparks. I agree there aren't many superhero stories where the heroes simply do not win based on circumstances and or their powers. I'm also finishing up a superhero novel (it'll be a series). Sorry to bother I just don't see heroes being written often in fiction (that wasn't tied to either a marvel or dc hero)

I've published one novel before (but it was self-published and I'm redoing it so I can submit it to an agent). My main questions are how long did it take you to find the right agent and the right publisher? How long does it take a publisher to publish/produce a book? If I think of more question I'll definitely ask (thank you in advance for answering any of these)

Congratulations on publishing your book! That’s an enormous accomplishment that you should be proud of. I wish you luck in finding an agent and publishing again. :)

Your questions are a bit complicated to answer because every book is different, but I’m going to do my level best. [Everyone: Please note that what I say here is my opinion, based on my personal experiences with writing/querying/publishing, and if you disagree or don’t like it, you’re welcome to make your own post about your own experiences.]

I decided not to query an agent when I was looking to publish my debut novel. In truth, you only need an agent if you’re looking to query one of the Big 5 publishing companies. They won’t accept manuscripts from authors who don’t have an agent. But other than that, agents really just get your foot in the door if you’re going for a big company where it’s easy for an unpublished, unrepresented author to get lost. And sure, they offer revisions and blurb ideas upon deciding to represent you, but a good publishing company will do that as well. tl;dr: it took me no time to find an agent, because I’m an unagented author. The decision to be agented/unagented is one every author must make upon getting ready to query.

Finding the right publisher was a matter of using google, really. I publish LGBT+-centric romance novels, so I looked at the big names in that niche: Carina, Samhain, and obviously Riptide Publishing, which was my top choice and the company I ended up contracting the Murmur Inc. series with. (That’s how I met my girlfriend, on a personal note. :D Love you, Rachel. <3) Also, in case you were wondering, because my novel was in the absolute biggest and best-selling genre that my company is always looking for (contemporary romance), it only took me six weeks to get pulled out of their hundreds of submissions, read, and offered a contract, which is huge. Not everyone has that kind of luck, and genre can be even more important than your query letter. I’ll touch on that more below.

When looking at companies, it’s important that it’s a good fit on both sides. You have to have what they want, and they have to have what you want. Genre is SO IMPORTANT. If you’re a debut author with no following/fanbase, and you submit something to a company that’s not a big part of their market share, it likely won’t sell, and they might not take a chance on you. Publishers often lose money on debut authors, so you need to show them that you’re worth the potential loss. Find a publisher who specializes in what you’re selling. In my case, that was m/m contemporary romance. It’s Riptide’s bread and butter, and they’re always looking for books like that. tl;dr: use google to research different companies and select one that makes sense for your genre.

How long a publisher takes to produce a book depends on the company. My first publishing company, Less Than Three Press, took a few months. When I submitted Hotline to Riptide, however, they accepted it in late November, and it wasn’t published until Halloween of the following year. Now, you might think that a long wait period is a bad thing, but it’s not. In that time, I went through three extensive rounds of editing, sensitivity reading, blurb writing, cover designing, blog tours, and so much marketing. @riptidepublishing hyped the ever-loving fuck outta my book, which was how I was able to have a successful debut. Marketing is everything, and editing is really key as well, so make sure you select a company that wants to put in the time to do it right. tl;dr Publishing companies take different lengths of time to produce a book based on their personal preferences, but you should expect it to take about a year if they know what they’re doing.

Lemme think if there’s anything else I can pass on while I’m here … It’s important to be aware of changes in the market. For example, 2007 was a good year to have a vampire romance novel, since Twilight-mania was in full swing. But just a few years after that, the market was so saturated that we’re still having trouble with anything pertaining to vampires/werewolves/zombies. Same thing with dystopian YA novels a la the Hunger Games craze. 

Also, romance novels now occupy a huge chunk of the market, whereas just twenty years ago, they were much less mainstream. But people are buying them, and so the demand is there! Diversity is required these days, thankfully, whereas a few decades ago, it would have gotten a book rejected. I’m not saying you should write only what readers want, or if you’ve written a book that isn’t hot right now it’ll never publish. It might just be a matter of waiting until the publishing climate has shifted in your favor! tl;dr genre is everything, take note of where the market leads you, and above all else, NEVER GIVE UP! You can do it! :D

🖊 i’ve put Paige (who joins the cast halfway through UnSuper Squad) through way more crap than she deserves jhjhg. she tries to act all Tough and Edgy but she’s really just a Big Emotional Baby (it’s the Pisces Moon) who cares so, so deeply for her loved ones and would do anything to protect them (it’s the Cancer Rising). and she just doesn’t gaf what anyone thinks of her, she’s unapologetically weird and loud and i’m love her and i get so emotional thinking about her– 

also some of y’all already know what is up with Paige because i can’t keep my mouth shut so if you’re one of those i’ve spilled the beans to pls try to keep the spoilers a secret gfkjgfkjf
